Bangkok--Mar 16--Bangkok
Bangkok, Thailand, March 16, 2000 -- Driving enthusiasts are to get yet another opportunity to experience some of the unique cultural and tourism festivals of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) in the month of April by driving from Bangkok to Yunnan Province of China. The Third Thailand-Laos-Yunnan Friendship Caravan is to be operated between the three countries to visit the First Kunming International Tourism Festival in China and participate in the Songkran Festival in Chiang Rung during April 6-16, 2000.
The Caravan is being organised by the Indochina Caravan Travel Company in co-operation with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Yunnan Provincial Tourism Administration to develop overland routes within the GMS. TAT will send its floral float and classical dancers to join the festival.
TAT initially organised the First Thai-Myanmar-China Friendship Caravan (Bangkok-Kunming) in 1993 to strengthen relations between the peoples of the GMS countries and to boost tourism within the Subregion. That was followed by several caravans including the Thailand-Laos-Yunnan caravans in 1998. The trip in 2000 will be led by TAT Governor Pradech Phayakvichien.
With billions of dollars worth of roads and bridges emerging in the GMS, TAT sees the organisation of friendship caravans as being one of the best ways to maintain the developing momentum and interest of tour operators in seeing for themselves the future packaging potential of one of the world s last tourism frontiers. This upcoming 3,000-km caravan will leave Bangkok on April 6, 2000, and cross the Mekong River at Chiang Khong district in Chiang Rai to Luang Namtha in Laos by ferry, then travel to Dali in Yunnan Province via Mohan, Simao, Mojiang and Kunming.
The group will join the floral parade of the First Kunming International Tourism Festival. After that, it will return to the Songkran Festival (water-throwing festival) in Chiang Rung. Applications to join the caravan are now being accepted and should be sent to Indochina Caravan by March 20, 2000.
Participants have to be in good health and will need to await prior clearance from the various authorities, which will be taken care of by the organisers. They will need to submit various supporting documentation, including passports, licenses and photographs.
The cars must be 4X4 WD vehicles, each limited to a maximum of four persons (driver included). All vehicles will have to be inspected by the organiser. The registration fee is 34,000 baht per person which includes 11- nights twin accommodation, most meals, entrance fees to all tourist attractions in Yunnan and Laos, boarding pass fees for Yunnan and Laos, visa entry fees for Yunnan and Laos, temporary driving license in Yunnan and car insurance.
