Bangkok--15 Jul--FAQ – 1 in 2 Thai consumers will switch service provider within six months if their current mobile operator does not provide 5G – Consumers in Thailand willing to pay 30 percent premium for top selected 5G services – Average monthly mobile data traffic per smartphone in Thailand could increase by 10 times to 70 GB per month on a 5G device Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) has released a new ConsumerLab study 5G Consumer Potential with specific insights on countries like Thailand, busting certain industry myths surrounding the value of 5G for consumers while highlighting opportunities available for operators. In Thailand, this report is based on 1,500 interviews with smartphone users aged between 15 to 69 years old. Statistically, the views of these participants are representative of 19 million people in the country. According to the report, half of Thai consumers will switch service provider within six months if their current mobile operator does not provide 5G. Consumers in Thailand are ready to pay a 30 percent premium for top selected 5G services. Based on consumer-predicted future usage patterns, average mobile data usage over a 5G device could increase by 10 times to 70 GB per month in Thailand, while heavy usage smartphone users could be consuming 130 GB of mobile data monthly by 2025. Nadine Allen, Head of Ericsson Thailand, says, "There is growing awareness around 5G globally. In Thailand, consumers are already waiting for 5G, providing mobile operators with a first-mover advantage for early transition. At Ericsson, we are the first with live 5G networks in four continents. With global expertise and a strong local footprint, we are well-positioned to enable Thailand's digital vision and provide consumers with a good 5G experience." As 5G continues to be rolled out, video as well as immersive technologies like AR/VR will greatly enhance user experience. Around 76 percent of Thai smartphone users interviewed believe that AR glasses will be the norm by 2025. Local consumers are expected to spend an additional three hours watching videos on mobile devices, out of which one hour will be on AR/VR glasses. In addition, 88 percent of smartphone users believe they will be using 3D holographic calls on a weekly basis, while 13 percent expect video calls to be completely replaced by holographic calls. A total of 86 percent of Thai consumers surveyed have also indicated that the console is becoming obsolete, with the smartphone soon to be the new gaming console. Wuttichai Wutti-Udomlert, Head of Network Solutions at Ericsson Thailand, continues, "5G is definitely taking off at a rapid pace. This new generation of cellular mobile technology will serve consumers, enterprises and take the Internet of Things to the next level, where superior connectivity is a prerequisite. However, the full benefits of 5G can only be reaped when we have a solid ecosystem in place with technology, regulatory, security, and industry partners all playing an important role." Globally, 5G uptake will be faster than expected According to the June 2019 edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report, 5G uptake globally will be even faster than expected. In South East Asia and Oceania, total mobile data traffic per month is expected to grow 7 times from 2.3 exabytes (EB) in 2018 to 16EB by 2024, with almost 12 percent of subscriptions in the region forecasted for 5G by the end of 2024. Meanwhile, total mobile data traffic will continue to soar globally with an increase of 82 percent year-on-year. It is expected to reach 131 exabytes (EB) per month by the end of 2024, at which time 35 percent is projected to be over 5G networks. Today, operators in different markets have already switched on 5G following the launch of 5G-compatible smartphones. Service providers in some markets are setting more ambitious targets for population coverage of up to 90 percent within the first year. The strong commitment of chipset and device vendors is also key to the acceleration of 5G adoption. Smartphones for all main spectrum bands are slated to hit the market over the course of this year. As 5G devices increasingly become available and more 5G networks go live, more than 10 million 5G subscriptions are projected worldwide by the end of 2019. By the end of 2024, 5G coverage is forecast to reach 45 percent of the world's population, a figure which could surge to 65 percent, as spectrum sharing technology enables 5G deployments on LTE frequency bands.
