RAYTHEON AWARDED AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL CONTRACT FOR ULAANBAATAR, MONGOLIA SYSTEM TO BE BASED ON STATE-OF-THE-ART CNS/ATM SATELLITE TECHNOLOGY BEDFORD, Mass., May 9/ PRNewswire-AsiaNet/-- Raytheon Electronic Systems announced today that it had signed a contract with the Civil Aviation Authority of Mongolia (CAAM) for the supply and installation of an air trafffic control (ATC) system and an aeronautical communication systems to Mongolia. The project is supported by a loan from the Asian Developement Bank. As prime contractor for the program, Raytheon will design, install and commission the new system as a well as provide training for the operation and maintenance. Raytheon was selected as the contractor for the program by the CAAM after a competitive bidding process that included a number of international companies. The value of the contract is $11.7 million. "This is an exciting win for us as the Mongolian system will be at the forefront of new satellite-based air traffic control technology", said Mike Hoeffler, raytheon's Manager of Transportation Systems. "By using satellite data, aircraft can be controlled cost-effectively over a wide expanse of territory. Mongolia has chosen to work with Raytheon to install an ATC system that makes more extensive use of satellite communications than any other systems in the world." The control system for the ATC center will be located at the airport in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. Satellite communications will be used to link the central facility with twenty-two (22) regional airports. "Five years ago, coverage over this area would have to have been by radar," said Hoeffler. "Today we are able to use a more cost effective satellite-based system to get the same results." Scheduled to be operational in 1998, this new ATC system is a key part of Mongolia's National Air Navigation Developement Project. (NANDP). Raytheon has been extensively involved in the developemet of communications, navigation and surveillance air traffic management (CNS/ATM) technology. Tne company has conducted CNS/ATM tests in both China and the United States.
