AVENTIS DEALBREAKER...
BASEL: Novartis announced today it decided to discontinue
negotiations and not submit a bid for a potential combination
of Aventis and Novartis' businesses. Novartis had entered
negotiations at the unanimous request of the Aventis
Supervisory Board as an alternative to Sanofi's hostile bid for
Aventis. Following Aventis' decision to engage in discussions
with Sanofi, at the strong intervention of the French
Government, Novartis decided not to proceed.

In what appears to be a world first, Nielsen BookData
announced today that it will supply a Dynamic XML service from
its International database to global ebook aggregator, eBooks
Corporation. Publishers will be able to supplement their
metadata with information from the Nielsen BookData database
through Pi, eBooks' recently launched publisher interface. The
move will be a time-saver for publishers who often face a
daunting data-entry task in submitting their new titles to
ebook aggregators.

BASEL: Novartis announced today that the Japanese health
authority has approved Sandostatin LAR (octreotide acetate for
injectable suspension) for the treatment of acromegaly and
pituitary gigantism which is unresponsive to or unsuitable for
surgery or other drug therapies, and for symptoms associated
with gastrointestinal hormone secreting tumors (also known as
gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, including
carcinoid tumors, gastrinomas, and VIPomas (Vasoactive
Intestinal Peptide-secreting tumors).
