ADVISORY: CHECKPOINT(R) ELECTRONIC ANTI-SHOPLIFTING SYSTEMS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH CARDIAC PACEMAKER INTERFERENCE CHECKPOINT EAS SYSTEMS USE RADIO FREQUENCY (RF) TECHNOLOGY TO DISCOURAGE RETAIL STORE SHOPLIFTING New Jersey, March 12/PRNewswire-Asianet/ For the benefit of its customers and consumers nationwide, Checkpoint Systems has issued the following educational advisory to prevent any confusion regarding recent media reports of interactions between certain anti-shoplifting technologies and cardiac pacemakers. Checkpoint does not manufacture acousto-magnetic systems which have been associated with such interactions. Its technology is radio frequency-based, which in a recent comprehensive study, was found to be 100% free of interactions with all models of pacemakers tested. Electronic anti-shoplifting devices (also known as Electronic Article Surveillance or "EAS" systems) are purchased by retail stores to control shoplifting and promote security. Not all of these systems use the same technology, and different technologies work in unique ways. Medical researchers and the news media have begun to question whether some EAS systems interact with cardiac pacemakers, and if there are safety implications to pacemaker patients. Checkpoint anti-shoplifting systems are based on radio frequency technology, which provides unique and safe radio signals that are attached to merchandise using paper thin tags in products or packaging. In the case of a typical retail store shoplifting, a radio signal is recognized electronically by Checkpoint detection systems, and store personnel are alerted. RF technologies in Checkpoint EAS systems safely protect hard goods and soft goods in any type of retail store. In the most comprehensive study of its kind in humans, conducted by the Heart Institute of St. Petersburg (FL), lead investigator Michael McIvor, MD found that Checkpoint's RF EAS technology was 100 percent free of any interaction with all models of pacemakers tested. The study found the most common pacemaker interaction with acousto-magnetic technology based anti-shoplifting systems, which are not manufactured by Checkpoint. Checkpoint Systems, Inc. (NYSE: CKP), located in Thorofare, N.J., is a leading provider of integrated security systems for retailers worldwide. The company is also the leading provider of radio frequency source tagging, which embeds a paper thin label into products or product packaging.
