Despite Asia's economic troubles, China continues construction of new power plants as part of a massive modernization drive. Major contracts include turbines, substations, conveyors, silos, feeders, and waste treatment. Quote requests begin in July. Site preparation follows in January 1999. Completion is estimated for mid 2001. Including SZPP, China plans to add 135 million kilowatts to its generating capacity. To meet this goal, 8 nuclear, 10 hydroelectric and more than 30 coal-fired plants are under construction or planned. Total spending could top $65 billion.
