On 14 May 2008, Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama attended the Inauguration Ceremony of Route No.48 (Koh Kong-Sre Ambel) which was presided over by Mr. Somchai Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, who represented the Royal Thai Government, and Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia, at Koh Kong, Cambodia.
On this occasion, Foreign Minister Noppadon gave a press interview, gist as follows:
1. The Route 48 (Koh Kong-Sre Ambel) project encompasses improvements to Route 48, which is around 150 kilometres in length, and the construction of four bridges along the route. To this end, the Royal Thai Government has provided a soft loan of around 800 million baht for road improvements and grant of around 288 million baht for the construction of the bridges. The Route is part of the road network initiated under the framework of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) connecting the Southwestern part of Cambodia to the Eastern part of Thailand. Route 48 also serves as a tourist route and will also bring the two countries closer together both through increased economic and trade relations and enhanced people-to-people contacts.
2. To promote the development of more transportation links in the region, the Royal Thai Government will also be extending a soft loan in the amount of 1.4 billion baht to improve Route No.68 (O’smach-Samrong-Kralanh) to support the said GMS road network.
3. Such cooperation between Thailand and Cambodia has contributed much towards the strengthening of the GMS transportation network in accordance with the so called “3Cs” philosophy, namely connectivity, competitiveness and community.
