With reference to the recent news reports regarding the group of 198 Rohingyas found off Indonesia’s coast of Aceh on 3 February 2009, as well as allegations concerning Thailand’s mistreatment of the said group, Mr. Tharit Charungvat, Director-General of Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry answered media queries, as follows:
- The Spokesperson is aware of the news reports but details of the allegations need to be thoroughly verified and ascertained.
- Nonetheless, the Spokesperson has reiterated that Thailand is committed to maintaining its traditional adherence to humanitarian principles and the protection of human rights. Humane treatment has included looking after their basic needs in terms of food, water and essential medicines. No mistreatment has been accorded to illegal migrants, regardless of their status.
- Thailand continues to look forward to fostering regional cooperation in tackling the issue of Rohinyga illegal migrants, with a particular focus on addressing the issue at the source.
