Energy Ministry Updates Progress of “Reduce Global Warming for His Majesty the King” Campaign and Launches Short Film to Honor HM’s Wisdom in Alternative Energy
The Ministry of Energy launched a short film to honor King Bhumibol’s wisdom in alternative energy to be broadcast on all Thai television channels together with announced the success of the “Reduce Global Warming for His Majesty the King” campaign as it reaches one year operation, with achievements include reduction of CO2 emission by over 300,000 tonnes annually and planting of more than 18 million trees under the forest cultivation program.
Mr. Suwat Liptapanlop, former Deputy Prime Minister and Advisor to the Chairman of the Organizing Board for the Celebration of the 60th Anniversary of HM’s Coronation and His Birthday Anniversary and Dr. Wannarat Channukul, Minister of Energy announced the progress of activities organized in celebration of the 60th Anniversary of HM King Bhumibol’s Coronation and His Birthday Anniversary and the launch of the new short film depicting HM’s wisdom in the field of alternative energy. The film features King Bhumibol’s long-term vision in moving the nation towards energy independence and sustainability by utilizing various agricultural products as energy sources. This not only helps solve the problem of agricultural product price drop but reduces the volume of energy import which account for a hefty import worth almost Baht 800 billion in 2009.
Mr. Suwat Liptapanlop revealed that the “Reduce Global Warming for His Majesty the King” campaign was initiated through the collaboration of 12 government, state enterprise and private organizations. These comprise the Ministry of Energy and its subordinate departments including the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO), the Department of Mineral Fuels (DMF), the Department of Energy Business (DOEB), the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE); Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), PTT Plc., Bangchak Petroleum Plc., Electricity Generating Plc., Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding Plc., IRPC Plc. and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). A total 28 projects divided into 6 categories organized under the campaign helps reduce CO2 emission by 336,000 tonnes annually, substantially exceeding the target level of 207,759 tonnes annually. This was primarily due to the forest cultivation program initiated in May 2010 which has so far planted 18,068,768 trees adding 25,088 rai of forest area to the country.
Other activities under the campaign include the biogas alternative fuels project, the promotion of vehicle inspection program among Thai motorists, the hydroelectric power plant project at Chao Phraya dam, the 5-megawatt solar farm, the wind turbine project at the energy forest in Sikew district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, the promotion of regular air conditioner cleaning and use of compact fluorescent lamp no. 5, the sailing across Thai Gulf competition to commemorate His Majesty’s great role as the first pioneer in long distance sailing in Thailand and The Paluay Green Island in Koh Samui district.
The recently-launched His Majesty’s 84th Anniversary photo book project organized with collaboration of the 14 organizations comprises 4 major activities including photography training for officers of Royal Initiative Projects, production of photo book and VCD in commemoration of His Majesty’s 84th Anniversary, production of one-million greeting cards and the outdoor photo exhibition on the theme of “Pictures Taken Beside Our Father’s Home” on December 1 — 9, 2010. All Thai people are welcomed to take part in this campaign.
“All activities organized under the “Reduce Global Warming for His Majesty the King” campaign aim at promoting the awareness and support on alternative energy among Thai people to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of HM’s Coronation and His Birthday Anniversary. In addition, the campaign raises public awareness on solving the global warming crisis which is a major world concern. Planting trees and reducing energy consumption at home are easy ways that every people can do to help save the world,” said Suwat.
Dr. Wannarat Channukul, Minister of Energy said that “the Energy Ministry initiated the “Thailand — Land of Alterative Energy” campaign to honor His Majesty’s wisdom in the field of alternative energy and raise awareness on alternative energy among Thai people across the country. The pervasive consumption of alternative energy will greatly benefit the country, Thai people, Thai farmers and the environment, as well as help create energy sustainability and reduce energy import.”
The short film honoring His Majesty titling “His Majesty’s Wisdom in Alternative Energy” premiered today aims at creating public appreciation on the capability and long-term vision of King Bhumibol which will subsequently generate the pride of alternative consumption among every parts of the Thai society.
Dr. Wannarat added that “Thai people are lucky enough to have abundant natural resources. Though, a greater luck for us all is that we have beloved king who is the center of our hearts. King Bhumibol initiated the idea of alternative energy long before the energy crisis actually happened. With his wisdom, Thai people has now reached a good stage today in terms of alternative energy development and are ready to build energy sustainability by converting surrounding natural resources into energy. This helps create a strong immune system among Thai people for energy development.”
The one-minute short film titling “His Majesty’s Wisdom in Alternative Energy” will be broadcast on Thai television channels and theatres nationwide starting October 2010. In addition, the Energy Ministry also utilizes a range of communication media including outdoor billboards across Bangkok and provincial areas showcase His Majesty’s vision on alternative energy, and print media featuring His Majesty’s activities and talents on alternative energy development published in several newspapers and magazines, which will be seen until December 2010.
