Bangkok--7 Oct--Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit The Living Room’s reputation for showcasing high calibre international jazz musicians is well-deserved. The walls of this sophisticated lounge bar may well be decorated with the black and white images of the jazz greats of yesteryear but it is the living legends of the jazz world that take to the stage. In November and December, The Living Room is thrilled to welcome the Jeremy Monteiro Trio with special guest, the renowned British saxophonist, Alan Barnes. Performing from November 30 — December 4, 2010, jazz fans will be treated to a truly memorable display of musicianship by two acknowledged masters of their respective instruments. Saxophonist Alan Barnes is a legend in his own lifetime. Having studied saxophone, woodwinds and arranging at the Leeds College of Music in the UK, he moved to London in 1980, playing and touring Europe with the Midnight Follies Orchestra and later the Pasadena Roof Orchestra. In 1983 he joined the hard bop band of Tommy Chase where he began to attract considerable attention on the UK jazz scene. Throughout his extraordinary career, Alan has toured and recorded with big band leaders, Dick Walter, Kenny Baker, Bob Wilber, Don Weller, Stan Tracey, Mike Westbrook and John Dankworth. He has also appeared as a session musician on albums by Selina Jones, Bjork, Van Morrison, Bryan Ferry, Clare Teal, and Jamie Cullum. Over the years Alan has won many British Jazz awards for his outstanding alto and baritone saxophone, and clarinet playing. In 2001 and 2006, he received the prestigious BBC Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year award and in November 2003 was made a fellow of the Leeds College of Music. John Forham, jazz critic at the UK’s Guardian newspaper described Alan as a “legend in the British jazz community, a brilliant multi-instrumentalist who is at home with the jazz repertoire of 30s and 40s swing, and the "modern" jazz style of bebop.” Regarded for his faultless virtuosity and breathtaking performances, Alan is also acknowledged as one of the UK's key figures keeping the non-metropolitan jazz scene alive, and in the work he does with youth bands, an inspiration to the next generation too. Pianist Jeremy Monteiro is dubbed the “King of Swing” and was instrumental in establishing The Living Room as Bangkok’s premier jazz venue. Swing Magazine of Switzerland called him "one of the best exponents of Jazz Piano" after he performed with Monteiro Young and Holt at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. He has recorded more than 20 jazz albums as leader and has played on numerous other jazz albums by other jazz artists, including one by Grammy Award winning jazz saxophonist Ernie Watts, which he also produced. As well as being a professional musician, Jeremy is a dedicated educator and is Visiting Chair of Jazz & Professor at LaSalle College of the Arts in Singapore, a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, Manufactures and Commerce in the UK, and a Fellow of the London College of Music. He also received the prestigious Cultural Medallion for Arts Achievement in Singapore, the first jazz musician in Singapore to be awarded the accolade. During the performance with Alan Barnes, the Jeremy Monteiro Trio will feature renowned drummer, Shawn Kelley and Thailand’s foremost bassist, Therdsak Wongvichien. Rarely does the opportunity arise to see such high calibre jazz musicians play in Bangkok. To see them perform in the intimate surroundings of The Living Room is nothing short of a jazz sensation.
