Bangkok--19 Oct--Philips Electronics i Light Marina Bay, Asia’s first ever sustainable light art festival, will take place from 15 October to 7 November 2010 in the newly developed Marina Bay area. The Festival is presented by Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) in collaboration with Smart Light Singapore. i Light Marina Bay is conceived as a festival that creates a dynamic visual night environment through the use of energy-efficient lighting for the community to enjoy. The first major light art event in Asia, the Festival is set to become the regional platform for the exchange of ideas and technology, artistic expression and public engagement through beautiful light art works with intelligent light usage. A key component of the Festival is the participation of both local and international light artists and designers who have created new, site-specific works addressing the theme of people, place and time. In this three-week showcase of light art installations, Philips Lighting is using this platform to demonstrate its vision of enhancing life with light and how lighting can aid city beautification programs in a sustainable and energy efficient manner. The Festival will also showcase how innovative lighting leverages urban interaction, enhance community and promotes well-being and safety. The aim of the Festival is to create awareness of energy-saving lighting technology, not only in the commercial environment and public spaces, but also within homes. The light art installations and sculptures, featuring the use of energy-efficient lights and lighting techniques, will transform Singapore’s Marina Bay into a spectacular canvas of light for Singaporeans and tourists to enjoy. Powered by Philips Lighting, the unique 3.5km ‘Light Walk’ features 26 light art installations designed by 14 local and 20 international artists (refer to Annex 2 for full list and details). Of these, 14 light art installations are using the Philips Color Kinetics and Selecon lighting systems. Philips Color Kinetics’ award winning LED lighting systems combine the advantages of LEDs with advanced digital control technology, generating millions of colors and high-quality white light without the cost and complexities of traditional lighting methods. The key highlights of the light art installations powered by Philips are: - A Blue Mirage in the City of Light by WY-TO architects, Yann Follain and Pauline Gaudry from Singapore. This depicts a gem that reflects light from both the natural and artificial light sources present at Marina Bay, creating prismatic reflections of the surrounding cityscape. 16 ensembles of 2-metre tall 20/20 laminated glass are installed with the Philips eW Flex SLX lighting system. This lighting system is a versatile strand of 50 individually controllable white light LED nodes. The durable, flexible form factor allows for dynamic points of white light to be installed across nearly any interior or exterior surface, including walls, ceilings, floors, three-dimensional sculptures, and set pieces. eW Flex SLX can also light tight alcove spaces and signage. - Animal Tree, a piece by Pitupong Chaowakul of Thailand, is a modern and more sustainable interpretation of street lighting. The lamp pole, which can be installed in any public space, is composed of 512 pieces of orange happy bears and aims to provide shade in the day and emit light at night. This installation is powered partly by the harnessing of solar energy and also uses the Philips eW Flex SLX lighting system. - C/C is a functional sculpture that illuminates at night while allowing the public to use it as a sitting area. Constructed out of acrylic sheets, the installation features colored LED lights, Philips iColorFlex SLX, which is then reflected onto the sheets. As a sculpture, it also serves to give a futuristic edge to the environment. The Philips iColorFlex SLX is an affordable and versatile strand of 50 large, individually controllable, full-color LED nodes. The flexible form factor accommodates two and three dimensional configurations, while bright, full-color nodes support long distance viewing for architectural accent and perimeter lighting, large-scale signage, and building-covering video displays. - Flight to Light is the artist's vision of a futurist city where buildings blaze in colours vivid and vibrant from the crystalline and fractal forms in the cubes. The installation uses the Philips iColor MRg2 to wash the sculpture with stunning hues of colours to enliven the audiences’ experience. The Philips iColor MR g2 is an intelligent, color-changing lamp that delivers intense, saturated bursts of color and color- changing effects. - ICU Standt:punkt is a canvas of light work through an intricate play of digital light language and impulses. The canvas transforms with every step, communicating in its own tempo with the rhythm of the city. With every flush of change, the point of view alters and evokes senses of recognition and anticipation. This effect is achieved through the use of Philips Selecon Pacific MSR Zoomspot 575w, an advanced art stage lighting technology that utilizes a modular ellipsoidal range - one lamp house, six light sources and six zoom optical systems. - Positive Attracts, a lighting installation that explores the belief that the optimism of our mental state of mind (4th Dimension) can effect a positive outcome of our physical state (3rd Dimension). The installation is powered by Philips iColor Cove? MX Powercore and consists of the artist's 9 favourite optimistic visionaries (Heroes) who have used their mental state to effect positive outcomes in their physical world. The Philips iColor Cove MX Powercore is a range of high-intensity and high-performance LED fixtures that combines professional-grade color mixing and maximized output with the efficiency and cost-effectiveness provided by Powercore? technology. The lighting system is ideally suited for backlighting and cost-effective indoor wall grazing. - The Living! Project, designed by renowned Singapore artist Sun Yu Li, is an installation of 3,000 recycled plastic cups, to be lit up by low-energy LED light bulbs. As the festival goes along, students and members of the community are encouraged to add cups on a daily basis, completing the sculpture at 30,000 cups. This sculpture uses the Philips iColor Flex SL to “draw” light across the sculpture and illuminate it brilliantly. - The Light Within is a sculpture designed by Singaporean artist, Vellachi Ganesan, to offer a resting place for the passer-by amidst the chaos and distractions associated with our city life. The sculpture is inspired by the light of the womb and represents a space for the silence of thought, the rhythm our breath brings and a moment to embrace our own light within. The Philips ColorBlast Powercore, high-performance LED fixtures combine rich, saturated, wall-washing color and color-changing effects to bring out the beauty and serenity of light. - Wattfish?, an art piece by the Meinhardt Light Studio Team, Singapore, is an interactive installation, with a hand-crank electricity generator that invites audiences to wind the “reel” of fishing rods, powering up the fibre-optic lights using Philips eW Flex SLX along its “line”. This installation is set along the new Helix Bridge. Other installations lighted up Philips include Digital Origami Tigers, Human Tiles, Rainbow, The River Merchants and Touch.
