The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET)’s Foundation continued to support those who led in sacrificing to benefit society as a whole, honoring them through SET’s Social Recognition Project, which has been on-going for four consecutive years. In 2010 alone, SET donated THB12 million (approx. USD400,000) to six organizations and recognized six persons as role models.
“The Social Recognition Project is one of the SET’s corporate social responsibilities. This year, SET has recognized six organizations with a donation towards their work of THB2 million each (approx. USD66,666). One organization was selected in each area: the Professor Sangvian Indaravijaya Foundation (for education development), the Thai Library Association (for library development), the Vimuttayalaya Institute (for urban development), The Population and Community Development Association (for rural development), the Sugree Charoensook Foundation (for music development, and The Football History Association of Thailand (for sport development),” revealed SET Chairman Sompol Kiatphaibool.
Each organization nominated a person who best personified the organization’s ideals to receive the awards and scholarship from SET Foundation to support their work. This year the awards go to:
Education Development : The Professor Sangvian Indaravijaya Foundation has selected Police Captain Kittikhun Changkean, head principal of the Border Patrol Police School, Chiang Rai, to receive its Professor Sangvian Indaravijaya Award. He devoted himself physically, financially, and mentally, to help develop students and help the border police patrol’s work. He initiated the project “Building the Future of Thai Children,” by supporting economically challenged students with good academic records and good behavior, but need financial support to work towards their undergraduate degrees, hoping that they would return and help develop their home regions after graduation. He also supported people in the community to plant rubber trees in cornfields to increase their revenue and reduce forest destruction and burning, thus increasing the region’s green area.
Library Development: Ms. Jinadda Choochua, Librarian teacher of Satunwittaya School, Satun province, was selected by the Thai Library Association to receive the Khunying Manmas Chavalit award. Ms. Jinadda has devoted herself to develop her school’s library, including initiating an e-Library there. Her institution’s library has been widely accepted as a role model for other libraries not only in Satun and but nearby provinces. Moreover, she has also acted as a coach for primary schools that lack librarians and provided them with knowledge about library management.
Urban Development: Vimuttayalaya Institute selected Mr. Seub Nakhasathien to posthumously receive its Isara Methee Award. Mr. Seub was an academician and conservationist, the chief of the Huay Kha Kaeng Wildlife Sanctuary. Through his efforts, including his asking UNESCO to consider Thung Yai Naresuan and Huay Kha Kaeng to be world heritage sites, society as a whole and the public sector paid serious attention to the problems caused by destruction of Thailand’s forests. After his assassination, his fellow conservationists established the Seub Nakhasathien Foundation to continue his mission of protecting and preventing forest destruction. His conservationist ideas and devotion reflected the fact that if there is no forest, urban society cannot live for long.
Rural Development: The Population and Community Development Association has selected Phra Subin Paneeto, assistant abbot of Phai-lom Temple, Trad to receive its Mechai Viravaidya Award. He established a savings group to promote financial management in the community and help strengthen the local economy and morale. For almost 20 years now, this savings group has been using the village’s funds to solve debt problems, both in and out-of the formal banking system. The fund also helps those whose land and homes were foreclosed and helps buy land for the landless and homeless. His project benefits 62,542 members, who are the general public in Trad or members of its network in 42 provinces. This group has over THB736 million of members’ savings in circulation.
Music Development: The Sugree Charoensook Foundation has selected Mr. Sujit Wongthes, a poet, journalist, academician, and National Artist (Art) to receive it Sugree Charoensook Award. He has the capability and experience in developing and promoting music works and is well-accepted in society. His wide range of music expertise encourages academic article about music and creation of songs that are different from the traditional music. He has produced over 90 songs, recorded on Thai and Western musical instruments.
Sport Development: The Football History Association of Thailand has selected Mr. Rangsan Phaithoon, physical education teacher at Sakngam Wittaya School, Kamphaengphet province. He was the province’s outstanding sports teacher for 1998 and was honored for excellence in sport training in 2004. His love for sports has been evident for years, as he has been coaching both boys and girls in soccer in Kamphaengphet since 1996 until now -- using his own money. He has developed over 100 female soccer players and built teams at the in community, regional, and national levels. His players have been selected for the Thai national team.
“The Social Recognition Project honors and encourages both organizations and those they nominate. It also aims at encourage more persons to sacrifice themselves to do good deeds for the society, which will help build a better living society and result in a better society as a whole,” concluded Mr. Sompol.
