Bangkok--28 Mar--Bangkok Art and Culture Centre Where Would You Place Them? Art for Cultural Rights Exhibition 31st March — 12th June 2011 7th Floor, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre Presented by Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Community Arts Activity Group and Local—Inter Links Group. Coordinated by Jittima Pholsawek and Phaisan Plianbangchang. Opening Ceremony - 31st March 2011 (18.00 hr. by Dr. Seksan Prasertkul) “Where would you place them?” is a question posing through an art exhibition consisting of installations, live performance, photographs, video art, writing, music and poetry. The artists whose works will be on show have spent time with people in the local communities in question, getting to understand issues involved. The outcome of the project will be a body of works telling the stories of their troubled lives, in the process voicing concerns to the public. The artists have worked in areas that have been encroached upon by developmental projects resulting in people to migrate, or to live as strangers in their homelands. A tide of change cannot be countered, but should we not at least be aware of their problems? Where would we put them, so they can have a chance to live in peace as much as you and I? The areas represented in the exhibition: The Salween River and dam building, on the border of Thailand and Myanmar Sea nomads on the Andaman: Urak Lawoi, Mokan, Moklen, and how pioneer settlers become invaders when tourism industry and development bombarded local areas. The Mekong River: the river, invaded since colonial era, has now been affected by development, especially the building of dams which are detrimental to the environment and ways of live along the river. The three stories from three areas represent the fragility of lives without safety net, in the name of modern development.
