Southeast Asia is identified as among the regions most vulnerable to climate change with 80 percent of South-east Asia's 563 million people living within 100 kilometres the region’s coastlines. But is the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) capable of projecting one strong voice in the international climate talks, for the sake of the region?
The ASEAN for a Fair, Ambitious and Binding Global Deal (AFAB) is a network that calls for a more active and transparent engagement of the ASEAN at the UNFCCC. This press forum happens during the lead up to the United Nations Climate Change talks in Bangkok from April 3 — 8, 2011.
As host to the first Intersessional towards the 17th COP in Durban, South Africa later this year, Thailand sets the stage for a stronger ASEAN decision-making process and positioning under Indonesia’s leadership, which aptly centers on the theme, “ASEAN Community in the Global Community.”
Speakers:
Atty. Zelda Soriano, Political Advisor, Greenpeace Southeast Asia
Shalimar Vitan, Policy Advocacy Coordinator, Oxfam
