Bangkok--4 Apr--Spark Communications Rugby World Cup 2011 fever kicks off in Thailand New Zealand Embassy hosted a Business networking event to highlight the upcoming Rugby World Cup 2011. Bede Corry, New Zealand Ambassador to Thailand 8th - Mr. Chaianan Samudavanija, Ex-Director of Vajiravudh College The business of sport was the name of the game as New Zealand hosted a networking event to highlight the upcoming Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011). RWC 2011 takes place from 9 September to 23 October in New Zealand. The sport involves players running towards an opponent’s goal with an oval ball. Players on the defensive team must tackle and prevent attacking players from gaining ground. Some of the world’s leading exponents of the game — New Zealand, Australia, France, South Africa and England, among others - will be competing. The business side of RWC 2011 will involve business leaders from around the world visiting New Zealand to watch the games and do business while they are there. New Zealand Ambassador to Thailand H.E. Bede Corry says, “RWC 2011 is one of the largest sporting events in the world. In addition to watching exciting games of rugby, guests are going to have the opportunity to network, do business, and take time out to see some of the world’s top tourist attractions.” The Ambassador also thanked Thailand for its support following the recent earthquake and gave an update of the situation. “New Zealand is open for business and tourists and RWC 2011 will kick off as planned with all matches being played in New Zealand. About 85,000 fans will be travelling to New Zealand while a television audience of around four billion will tune in to the tournament.” Acting Trade Commissioner to Thailand Thanadej Trakul-Yingyong adds, “This is a great year for business people to visit New Zealand. The club has been set up by the New Zealand government to connect international visitors with key local players in sectors such as foods and beverages, ICT, specialised manufacturing, aviation, creative industries and more. Already lined up in New Zealand is the REAL New Zealand Festival, a nationwide celebration of all things Kiwi. Activities cover a spectrum of interests spanning culture and heritage, arts and theatre, music, nature and outdoors, sports recreation, food and beverage and much more. The networking event, organised by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, also promoted New Zealand’s renowned food and beverage sector which is famed for the high quality of its produce, including seafood, fruit, meat and wine that is safe and traceable, as well as nutritious “functional foods” with special health benefits. In 2010, Forbes ranked New Zealand as the third best country to do business in, based on criteria such as trade and monetary freedom, property rights, innovation, technology and market performance. New Zealand and Thailand currently enjoy a Closer Economic Partnership (CEP), and bilateral trade between the two countries reached THB 46.8 billion in 2010.
