Low fares leader Jetstar today begins a three-times weekly direct service between Cairns — Auckland, further boosting tourism between Australia and New Zealand.
The new service is expected to provide a welcome tourism boost for Queensland in the lead-up to the Easter peak holiday period, and it will deliver more than 55,000 seats each year between the two cities.
Jetstar today launched the service with one-way JetSaver Light sale fares from Cairns to Auckland from AUD$99# (JetSaver Light* fares — carry-on baggage only) at Jetstar.com. (Terms and Conditions apply#).
Jetstar Chief Executive Officer David Hall said Jetstar expected the low fare connection to be a welcome tourism benefit for Far North Queensland.
“According to Tourism Research Australia data (International Visitors Survey 2006 — 2010), New Zealanders spend on average AUD$2073 when travelling in Australia. Based on this statistic, Jetstar’s new service has the potential to generate up to $40 million for the local economy each year,” Mr Hall said.
“We believe this new international Jetstar route will be a welcome benefit for Queensland tourism during its recovery from recent significant natural disasters,” Mr Hall said.
“Families from Cairns can now take advantage of Jetstar’s low fare flying direct to Auckland and use Jetstar’s New Zealand domestic network to experience everything New Zealand has to offer from exploring Auckland’s harbour, to hitting the ski fields in Queenstown.
"Likewise, families from Auckland can now fly direct to Cairns with Jetstar and explore this popular Australian destination offering unique wildlife and incredible attractions like the heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef right on their doorstep.
“Kiwi travellers can fully maximize the connectivity of Jetstar’s expanding Cairns hub currently offering 95 weekly return services to a further seven Australian cities including Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.
“It’s another way Jetstar is offering Australian and Kiwi families more choice to fly to more destinations, more often, for less,” he said.
The new direct service is another example of Jetstar’s commitment to providing accessible family friendly air travel. Jetstar is also currently a finalist for a Family Friendly Airline Award through Kids First Fund — a US based organisation devoted to helping kids in need across the world.
