Seagate Technology (Thailand) Limited is working with Kasetsart University to sharpen young children’s skills and offer value knowledge on science, technology, Mathematics, computer and engineering to them. The camp aims at providing these young people with positive mind and passionate to be future scientists and researchers in the 24th Crystal Brain Camp Kasetsart-Seagate.
The 24th Crystal Brain Camp Kasetsart-Seagate is to offer young children with an exciting exposure to the prevalent digital world of today. This camp teaches the children about writing, reading, and learning to use the digital world for entertainment and education. These children also have the opportunity to team up with each other and build the earthquake-proofed homes. They also learn all procedures about jasmine rice screening and have the practical experiences in transplanting paddy sprouts in the field.
The camp is hosted on April 25 to May 1, 2011 and is offered to 230 children aged 10-13 years old. Young children make new friends, enjoy living in new place and learn more about computer, electronics as well as innovative sciences. They have a lot of fun in creative games and various entertainment activities. The camp is hosted at the Kampaengsan Agricultural Extension and Training Center, Kasetsart University, Kampaengsan Campus, Nakornpathom province.
Associate Professor Yuen Poovarawan, vice president of Information at Kasetsart University said, “Kasetsart University takes pride in cooperating with Seagate Technology (Thailand) Limited to host such a educational camp. We strongly believe that the well-planned instruction processes available in various camp activities, are effective learning tools for these youngsters. The extra-curriculum knowledge is the passion for them to seek for more scientific information so that they become the major workforce for country’s future growth and development.”
Miss Sirirat Euaypadung, Teparuk plant manager, Seagate Technology (Thailand) Limited said, “Sponsorship for the Crystal Brain Camp Kasetsart — Seagate for 13 consecutive years is in line with Seagate goals to provide beneficial knowledge and thorough understanding in science, Mathematics, technology and environment for young campers. The camp trains these young people to think creatively, improve their teamwork skills and encourage them to step outside of their private space by making their ideas public.
“At the 24th Crystal Brain Camp Kasetsart - Seagate, young children will learn about the digital world. They will cultivate the unity, use their free time in a most productive way, be motivated and hopefully this will bring about a positive change in their behavior. The Thai society will also benefit when these young children grow up to be highly-qualified citizens,” Miss Sirirat added.
Camp activities include Seagate Teparuk Plant Tour, Creative Electronics, Creative Digital Project, Young Genius Engineers, the Creative Invention, the Nature Touch and Morning Relaxation for Good Health well as Games and Recreation.
In Seagate Teparuk Plant Tour Activity, campers have the opportunity to tour the world-class hard disk drive manufacturing operation at Seagate Teparuk on the first day of the camp. The company executives briefed them. Moreover, company employees accompany with them in touring the plant.
In Creative Electronics, young children are assigned to develop their project and create the digital communication from electronic circuits.
In Creative Digital Project, children express their imagination and creative ideas by writing their Blogs. They share their stories from imagination. They also work as a team to compete in games which challenge their problem-solving and deliberation to bring success and excitement.
The Digital Project helps to enhance participants’ teamwork skills. By taking part in the digital creation projects, they also enjoy the creation of photos and videos.
The Creative Invention Activity provides young children with practical experiences in carrying on the jasmine rice screening from other rice breeds. Since rice carbohydrate structure of each rice breed is different, young children had the opportunity to use the Iodine and alkaline salt digestion techniques to differentiate jasmine rice from others.
They have a great chance to transplant paddy sprouts in the field as well. This activity brings joy to children and enables them to realize the value of rice they consume daily. Then, each team members will be trained how to cook the traditional Thai dessert called “Fried Banana and Coconut or Khao Mao Tod”.
The Young Genius Engineers Activity focuses primarily on enabling youngsters to develop engineering-based projects with the use of limited resources. This year, campers are assigned to work with their team members in designing and building the earthquake-proofed homes.
The Creative Activity provides young children with practical experiences in rice plantation. They have a great chance to transplant paddy sprouts in the field. This activity brings joy to children and enables them to realize the value of rice they consume daily. They also learn some simple rules in self-sufficiency economy.
The Nature Touch and Morning Relaxation for Good Health Activity is a good activity in the morning to make campers ready prior to joining other camp activities on each day. Organizers adapt the traditional Thai games and toys to bring fun and enjoyment to campers.
Games and Recreational activities held every night are aimed at teaching camp participants on problem solving, teamwork and the skills of collaboration. These are outdoor games, camp fire, classroom-based activities and newly designed activities to bring excitement to these young people.
Some interesting camp experiences include the interviews of the following campers:-
Natsorn Sitthisarn or Minnie, a student of Kasetsart University Laboratory School Center for Education Research and Development said that she enjoys with rice plantation and cooking Rice Berry fried. The robot assembly activity is new and challenging for her. In the Young Genius Engineers Activity, Minnie and her friends plan to build the earthquake-proofed home with the rectangular base. The second storey of this home should be triangle. Minnie says that the materials provided by camp lecturers make her and her team members build a strong home. Obviously, the camp brightens Minnie’s mind that science and technology are not difficult and can be applied in their daily lives.
Setthipark Sutthithanakom or Pun, a Mathayom 1 student of Satit Chula said that he has joined the Crystal Brain Camp Kasetsart-Seagate for the first time. It’s the most fun camp which he has ever joined. Pun learns that team unity is very important. He also learns about robotic development which is his one of his favorite pastimes. In this activity, he inserts the electronic circuits and develops a sumo-liked robot to take his opponents out from the contest field. Pun added that he would like to be future scientist.
Warit Chaya-ngamjit or Moo, a student of Saint Gabriel’s College said that he knows about the Crystal Brain Camp Kasetsart-Seagate from his cousin. Moo is impressed in the robotic development activity. At school, he likes Maths and dreams of becoming a physician in the future.
Nutchaya Jitjaturun or Ploy, a student from Phrae province said that she knows the Crystal Brain Camp KU-Seagate from her aunt. Ploy likes the robot assembly activity most. She makes friends with students from other schools at the camp and learns how to live with her new friends, her coaches and camp organizers. Her favorite subjects are science and Maths.
Jomtup Lojaya or Pingpong, a 13-year-old student of Assumption College Thonburi tells us about the camp benefits by saying “By taking part in the camp, I have an opportunity to join various exciting camp activities with new friends. For example, in the banana boat hunting activity, each team has one banana boat and is tasked to explode other banana boats by using danger limit (using number 1 to 200) and robot assembly activity, etc.”
