The Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) is joining forces with the General Insurance Association (GIA) to launch the new “holographic auto insurance policy” under the concept “Check, OK, Sure”. Policyholders can easily check whether their policy documents are real or fake with their own eyes. They can be sure whether it is really a genuine one by checking the hologram strip on the policy and can rest assured that they are covered by the policy.
The Secretary-General of Office of Insurance Commission, Mrs Chantra Buranarerk, said that OIC had recently launched a programme to investigate the compulsory auto insurance policy at the provincial transport offices throughout the country. They discovered that many of them were counterfeit and mandated by the car owner to avoid paying the correct motor vehicle tax. Some were made by charlatans using advanced technologies such as colour photocopying or computer scanning. This has caused trouble for the car owners when they had an accident, because they were not entitled to make a claim for compensation.
“One of OIC’s commitments, as an office to supervise the insurance business operation, is to protect people’s benefits from being compromised. Therefore, we have joined forces with the General Insurance Association to introduce a new compulsory auto insurance policy equipped with a 6mm wide hologram stripe on the badge and title of the General Insurance Association, like that which is seen on bank notes. The brand new holograph will be printed on the auto insurance policies and be used by every company. It will be effective from July 1, 2011.
Chairman of the Motor Insurance Committee of the General Insurance Association, Mr Somporn Suebthawilkul, said the new compulsory auto insurance policy was easy to use and could help prevent fraud. It is an innovation to be used in printing tables of auto insurance policies in line with the traffic victim protection act, using special paper that can prevent fraud. It is clear and easy to check whether it is fake or not.
“A policyholder or those who renew auto insurance can check whether the policy is really genuine by checking on the hologram stripe embedded on the policy. Most importantly, if you want to purchase or renew an auto insurance policy you should do it via certified insurance brokers or agents only. And you must ask for receipt every time,” Mr Somporn said.
Related agencies will disseminate the information about this new holographic auto insurance feature via all kinds of media to spread the word and enable people to understand it. So they can check it out by themselves and can ensure that they are protected by their policy in the case they have a car accident. In addition, it can help facilitate the Department of Transport in reviewing documents prior to the renewal of policies when owners pay motor vehicle tax.
