Companies are struggling with rigid and outdated storage architectures that are incapable of efficiently managing explosive data growth. These architectures also are limited by the lack of multitenancy and scalability features required for cloud computing. Multitenancy is a critical design element that enables consolidation of data from many different users without sacrificing security or performance.
To address this gap in storage, HP’s new Converged Storage architecture fundamentally changes how data is accessed by integrating scale-out storage software with converged server and storage hardware platforms. Advanced management tools that span the architecture help speed IT service delivery. As a result, clients can deploy and grow storage 41 percent faster(1) while reducing administration time by up to 90 percent.(2)
The HP Converged Storage portfolio includes virtualized and utility solutions that span every major storage protocol, and are delivered as physical or virtual systems with the multitenancy required by the cloud.
To accelerate the benefits of Converged Storage, HP announced a completely rearchitected ecosystem of services, financing and certification programs to help enterprises modernize their storage infrastructure.
Based on HP Converged Storage architecture, the new HP X9000 IBRIX Storage System for massive utility-based file storage scales to more than 16 petabytes and more than 1,000 nodes — all managed through a single interface.
HP also introduced the HP X5000 G2 Network Storage System for midsize companies, which was developed in concert with Microsoft. The HP X5000 is uniquely tuned for Microsoft-based networks and clients. Proprietary storage systems, which are built on more complex operating systems, are often very difficult to manage by companies heavily invested in Microsoft environments.
Efficient, simplified management of massive pools of data
As capacity needs increase, the complexity of managing multiple devices on legacy unified or network attached storage (NAS) architectures surges. The HP X9000 IBRIX Storage System eliminates this complexity by aggregating multiple devices and large virtual resource pools into a single namespace. This means that administrators can manage 1,000 devices as easily as a single device.
The X9000 IBRIX solution also enables clients to:
— Efficiently manage data from 14 terabytes to more than 16 petabytes with a single, easy-to-use console that lowers operational expense and enables rapid deployment of file-based applications.
— Reduce costs and boost business application performance with policy-based data tiering that automatically moves data to the optimal storage tier based on enterprise needs.
— Promote regulatory compliance by automating the retention of data based on date settings and by securing data with write-once read-many (WORM) file locking.
— Enhance flexibility by independently scaling capacity and performance without downtime using a fully distributed, multinode architecture.
Converged storage optimized for archive and search applications
Working closely with leading healthcare and file archiving software vendors, HP has developed solutions for medical imaging and long-term data archiving. These solutions are ideal for archiving email, Microsoft SharePoint and file data and are based on the HP X9000 IBRIX. They include:
— Picture Archive Communications Systems (PACS) that speed access and retrieval of massive volumes of information needed for effective diagnoses. To simplify implementation, the X9000 has been certified with GE Centricity, Agfa Impax, Sectra PACS and McKesson Horizon.
— Content archiving solutions to simplify compliance requirements by providing unlimited capacity to retain email, SharePoint, multimedia and other file-based data. The HP X9000 IBRIX consolidates unstructured data from any source into a single repository. It has been certified with Symantec Enterprise Vault, iTernity iCAS, Quantum StorNext and CommVault Simpana.
Clients are seeking to control and manage massive content, but moving forward they also must think about extracting more value from large file repositories. The HP X9000 has the scalability and efficiency features to meet these needs — today and into the future. With integrated metadata search innovations coming in the next year from HP Labs, the company’s central research arm, it will soon enable clients to query billions of unstructured file objects to analyze trends and monetize historical information.
Simplified file consolidation with high availability
The HP X5000 G2 Network Storage System is ideal for midsized companies with Windows?-centric environments. Its dual-server, clustered architecture increases data availability. Quick-start deployment tools enable the system to be up and running in minutes. Additionally, the HP X5000 G2 Network Storage system enables clients to:
— Lower costs by reducing power requirements by up to 58 and cooling requirements by up to 63 percent, as well as decreasing data center footprint by 50 percent over previous-generation platforms.(3)
— Improve performance with fast, secure access to information through native support for the Server Message Block 2.1 protocol and seamless integration with Windows Active Directory.
— Simplify file storage management and reduce risk by automatically categorizing, storing and retaining files based on business value.
— Increase internal storage density with 32 terabytes available in a 3U chassis as well as built-in file deduplication that can reduce capacity requirements by up to 40 percent.(4)
Programs and services to modernize storage infrastructure
HP also announced a comprehensive ecosystem of new professional and financial services. In addition, HP introduced training and certification programs to help clients modernize their storage infrastructure using HP Converged Storage. These new programs and services include:
HP Technology Consulting services to help clients optimize traditional infrastructure, protect data and accelerate the benefits of service-centric IT.
HP Enterprise Services adoption of HP Converged Storage for its clients and the recent addition of HP 3PAR Utility Storage to its list of outsourced storage offerings.
HP Financial Services introduction of a special utility financing structure that includes lease and flexible payment options.
HP ExpertONE certification for storage, which offer sales and technical professionals access to expertise for turning legacy storage environments into virtual resource pools based on HP Converged Infrastructure.
Availability
The enhanced HP X9000 Network Storage System is available now. The HP X5000 G2 Network Storage System is expected to be available in 4th quarter of this year.
