Bangkok--Sep 21--UBC UBC, in conjunction with CNN International and The Mass Communication Faculty Members of Thailand is holding the 3rd annual Young Journalist Award. Applications are now open for all final year university students of Communication Arts and Journalism faculties to compete for internships at CNN s Atlanta and Hong Kong bureaus. The deadline for receipt of applications is December 18, 1998. “UBC recognizes the importance of educational development for Thai youth and pursues a policy of providing socially beneficial activities targeting young Thais. As a mass media company, it is appropriate for us to team up with CNN International and the Mass Communication Faculties Members of Thailand to organize the Young Journalist Award. Now in its third year, this internship project gives communication arts and journalism students the opportunity to train with a world class news organisation—giving them an internationally competitive edge in their chosen profession,” says Dr. Kantima Dhanasobhon, Director of Corporate Communications at UBC. The winner of the Grand Prize will spend one month training at CNN headquarters in Atlanta. Two runners-up will receive two weeks of training at CNN s Hong Kong production center. All three winners will also train at CNN Bangkok and the UBC News Unit for a period of 2-3 weeks at each location. All expenses during the internship will be paid for by UBC and CNN International. Thai Airways International will sponsor the round trip plane tickets between Bangkok-Atlanta and Bangkok-Hong Kong. “For the past two years, CNN has been pleased to teach some bright Thai students valuable newsgathering skills and techniques and give them first-hand insight into the world of international journalism. CNN looks forward to offering this unique opportunity to more Thai students this year,” says Ms. Kanokewan Wuttithamrong, Account Director, Turner International Asia Pacific, Ltd. The Grand Prize winner will receive a one-month internship at CNN Atlanta, where they will work in the World Report Unit which compiles news and documentaries from around the world. The intern also will be an observer at the annual CNN World Report Contributor s Conference, which congregates hundreds of television journalists from around the world. Additionally, the internship will allow the winner an opportunity to see the CNN Features Unit and the CNN International News Desk in action. The two runner-up prizes include training at the CNN Hong Kong bureau, where the interns will experience the news-making process for programs including: “World News Asia”, “Asia This Day”, “Inside Asia”, and “Biz Asia”. Chairperson of the Mass Communication Faculty Members of Thailand, Assistant Professor Aruneeprapha Homsettee, states “The past two Young Journalist Awards have been a success and we saw participation by representatives from many universities and educational institutions from around the country. This year is no exception, as over 50 universities and institutions nationwide have recommended candidates”. Applicants interested in applying must be final year students pursuing studies in communication arts or journalism at universities or educational institutions. They must demonstrate English proficiency, creativity, an interest in mass communications and in local and international news.
