Thailand’s ancient festival known as ‘Loy Krathong’ this year will be celebrated on Thursday 10, November according to ancient Thai calendar. Pattaya Floating Market is of course preparing to be co-host with Pattaya City, expects more than hundred thousand tourists
Pattaya Floating Market after a meeting with Pattaya City recently disclosed that the market this year is to be honored by Pattaya City in regards of being co-host to organize the Loy Krathong, the main event takes place at Pattaya Beach Road, Soi 4.
The market managing director Mr. Manut Meepong disclosed after the long brainstorm and preparation meeting that the reason Pattaya City appointed Pattaya Floating Market as co-host is because its beauty and uniqueness of the traditional Thai riverside living community including its Thai style constructed and designed 114 teakwood shops.
‘I’m pretty sure that tourists this year will be satisfied and amazed by the beautiful market at night when all 114 teakwood house and shops here being colored with light decorations. The whole market will sure turn out to be as heavenly as probably have already seen in pictures. I strongly suggest all of you to mark this celebration on November 10 on your travel calendar.’
Apart from that, the highlight is ‘Beauty Pageant Contest’ known as ‘Noppamas’, opens for contestant between 16-25 year old, the winning price is more than 60,000 baht divided by 20,000, 15,000, 10,000 and 5,000 baht for winner, first and second runner up, and popular vote respectively, application fee is 500 baht and is available from now until November 8.
The night will also be fantasized with many traditional plays, games, and an on stage show starting from dark until late at night. The official floating time is 10pm to allow tourists in the market making their wishes and floating the ‘Krathong’ out to water.
As for ‘Loy Krathong’, the main objective for Thai people doing this is to pay respect and thankfulness towards the God of Water for providing one of the most necessary living essentials for human beings, through the whole year long, without water people and other living things couldn’t survive. Also, another important reason in doing this is to asking for forgiveness from the god of water, if humans have done something on purpose or not to cause pollution or dirtiness to the water. Most Thai people usually cut little piece of their nails and hair and added to the floating out with the Krathong in order that their sin is floated out and misfortunate away is another belief of this event.
The term ‘Loy’ literally means ‘Float’ and ‘Krathong’ literally means a ‘Raft. These are beautifully decorated with flowers usually about human’s palm size or a bit bigger, rounded and decorated its top with uniquely folded banana leave. Of course with the raft has a candlelit and joss sticks too before it is floated it out on to the water. Thailand marks this event as a public holiday.
