Bangkok--6 Dec--Vivaldi Public Relation A strong fleet of 30 Optimists and eight Lasers enjoyed strong winds off Kata Beach, with a patchwork of rolling low clouds proving an encompassing arena for the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta’s International Dinghy Class race. Conditions had been changeable leading up to the race, with weather flitting between light storms and cool, balanced racing conditions. The fleet of sailors from Phuket, Phang Nga, Samui, Songkhla and Sattahip (Pattaya) sailed the challenging waters of Kata, battling elements which offered an unpredictable and ever-evolving challenge throughout the day. The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta dinghy event was preceded by a three event Series over September, October and November where sailors sharpened their skills and eyed up their competition. The fleet of sailors came from around Thailand to take part in the three-day event with Thai youngsters from as young as seven years old sailing. The popularity of the International Dinghy Class at the Regatta grows year-on-year, with international-standard race management provided by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee. The aim of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta International Dinghy Class is to foster a wealth of new sailing talent who will one day progress to become experienced racers in their own right, possibly as Skippers of the Regatta’s magnificent full-size cruisers and Grand Prix vessels. Racing continues Sunday 4th and concludes on Monday 5th December, the first official day of the larger keelboats and multihulls. Joining the 38-strong dinghy fleet will be over 100 keelboats and multihulls, plus for the very first time, over 20 Kiteboards. The total sailing fleet is expected to be around 150 vessels.
