Bangkok--9 Jan--PC & Associates Consulting
After water from the North flowed down to Nakhon Sawan, Ayutthaya and, in the end, into Bangkok, Sanook.com became one of the companies affected by the flooding with its offices inundated by more than a meter of flood water for over a month. However, the flooding did not affect Sanook.com's services as the country's leading web site and online news source with Sanook.com's entire team continuing to work without taking a day off during the flooding.
Sanook!’s staff operated from a temporary office -- or in the case of those living in flooded areas they worked from home using the instant messaging program called "Sanook! QQ" to communicate in team -- along with opening a web page dedicated to reports about the flood situation to provide continuous news updates 24 hours a day about the flood crisis: http://news.sanook.com/thaiflood
Turning crisis into opportunity
The first round of flood relief activities was under the "Sanook! Help Friends" project and this began before the company became a flood victim itself with the collection of donations from staff members and from others who donated via the Sanook.com web site. The funds raised were used to purchase medicine that was distributed to victims in the flooded areas by the staff of Nok Airlines Company (Nok Air): http://webboard.sanook.com/forum/index.php?topic=3500890
This was followed by Sanook!'s project called "Sanook! Help-Hope-Heal" to assist victims of the 2011 flooding by accepting donations to help flood victims through the Sanook! web site with these funds being donated to the Red Cross: http://www.sanook.com/donation/thaiflood2011
Sanook! also organized a charity concert when more than 30 artists from many music labels played in front of the Major Cineplex Ratchayothin when Sanook! sponsored a shirt with the slogan "Help-Hope-Heal" with the proceeds from the sale of these also going to help flood victims: http://music.sanook.com/news/news_20872.php
Building hope in difficult times
Online media can do much more than merely providing information. Sanook.com joined hands with partners such as Google.com, the JetSki club of Patong Beach in Phuket and the First Infantry Battalion of the 11th Infantry Regiment of His Majesty the King’s Guard to bring jet skis over to help flood victims in the Don Muang-Song Prapa area where they enabled mobile medical units to move sick or ailing people out from flooded areas, placing them under the care of doctors in nearby hospitals and giving them hope while saving many lives in the process: http://www.sanook.com/donation/thaiflood2011/index.php
A mission to heal and to provide a future
While the river levels may have receded, in many areas the traces of trauma remain with the flood victims. So Sanook.com has moved ahead with its three-phase "Help-Hope-Heal" program and now invites its members on the Web to join in a caravan that will travel to Wat Chak Sa School in Muang District of Uthai Thani Province that had been completely destroyed by over 4 meters of flood water. The caravan will visit the school to perform healing and restoration activities on January 28-29, 2012 and anyone interested in participating may learn more details at http://www.sanook.com/a/caravan7/
Many stories such as these that occurred during the flooding demonstrate that whatever might happen, Sanook.com remains determined and committed to being a good online media player and to restoring happiness to society.
