Bangkok--2 May--AIT The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), as part of a World Bank-funded project, will train more than 400 managers, technicians and staff from Pakistan’s growing electric power distribution sector through a two-month intensive professional development program organized in Thailand. The Energy Distribution Services Management and Technology (EDSMAT) Program launched in Bangkok on 29 April 2012 is a tripartite program spearheaded by AIT Extension in cooperation with AIT’s Energy Field of Study and its School of Management. The tailor-made program will deliver specific capacity-building training and exposure to officials from four of Pakistan’s power distribution companies via AIT Extension’s technical and professional programs. AIT has secured the capacity-building component of the World Bank project, valued in the first phase at approximately $ (US) 1.5 million. For the Government of Pakistan, the EDSMAT Program is an important element of its drive to modernize the overall delivery of energy in the country experiencing rapidly growing consumer demand for power. Speaking at the program launch ceremony, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Mr. Sohail Mahmood, underscored the importance of professionalizing the delivery of energy distribution services in his home country, saying: “The energy sector is at the top of the agenda in Pakistan. The pivotal role played by power distribution companies to supply electricity to the public is crucial.” The ambassador added that the initiative also recognizes the importance of Pakistan’s bilateral partnership with AIT, an international intergovernmental organization of higher learning based in Pathumthani. It also confirms Pakistan’s good relations with AIT’s host country Thailand, he said. Supported by the capacity building program under the World Bank’s technical assistance, the EDSMAT avails of expertise at AIT to elevate the technical and managerial competence of hundreds of officials from Pakistan’s Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO), Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) and Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO). “This is a significant investment by the companies involved and by the country,” Ambassador, Mahmood told a large gathering of 72 power company trainees and Pakistani officials in Bangkok, which included the Chief Executive Officers of HESCO, LESCO and MEPCO. Mr. Guftar Ahmad, Chief Executive Officer, MEPCO agreed. “Our companies (four) have earmarked 30% of (the) World Bank’s technical assistance components of $ 15 million dollars for capacity building only,” he confirmed.
