Huawei, along with the World WLAN Application Alliance (WAA) and industry pioneers, released the Smart Campus Wi-Fi CSI Sensing Development and Use Cases White Paper at the Huawei Network Summit 2025 (Asia Pacific).
The White Paper explores Wi-Fi Channel State Information (CSI) sensing trends and extensive use cases on smart campuses, in an aim to push forward the Wi-Fi CSI sensing industry and create intelligent spaces by sensing everything through "Wi-Fi + X".
Guests attending the launch ceremony include Mr. Crane H. Yang, Executive Secretary of WAA, Mr. Ross Yu, Technical Editor of IEEE 802.11bn, Mr. Winson Cheang, Head of Infrastructure and User Services Section at the University of Macau, Mr. Shawn Zhao, President of the Campus Network Domain at Huawei's Data Communication Product Line, and Mr. Yury Yin, Chief Marketing Officer of Huawei's Data Communication Product Line.
The White Paper highlights how "Wi-Fi + X" merges connectivity and sensing to turbocharge digital and intelligent transformation of campuses. For example, "Wi-Fi + CSI" enables human presence detection, benefiting seamless hotel check-in and intelligent energy saving, school dormitory security inspection, and intrusion detection for industrial safety. Beyond this, "Wi-Fi + millimeter wave" can identify abnormal behavior such as falls and detect breathing and heartbeat rates, aiding smart healthcare applications like vital sign monitoring.
Huawei's Xinghe Intelligent Campus Solution incorporates Wi-Fi 7 Advanced technology, transforming wireless access points (APs) into sensing devices. Working like "sonar" to send and receive signals, APs can sense wireless channel fluctuations caused by centimeter-level micro-motions in the environment.
In this way, APs can accurately detect unauthorized cameras through dedicated sensing algorithms and AI-driven signal processing. Additionally, millimeter-wave radar technology facilitates 24/7 contactless monitoring of breathing, heartbeat, and out-of-bed status. All of these help create a smart campus featuring intelligent spaces and comprehensive security.
"Huawei's Xinghe Intelligent Campus Solution has gone beyond the scope of connectivity and is extending to sense everything. This solution underscores the significance of 'Wi-Fi + X', which leverages ubiquitous wireless APs to integrate general-purpose technologies (GPTs) such as IoT, sensing, and location-based service (LBS)," said Shawn Zhao, President of the Campus Network Domain, Huawei's Data Communication Product Line. "We firmly believe that 'Wi-Fi + X' fosters campus digital twins, intelligent campus spaces, and seamless integration with campus management systems. This innovation enhances security, privacy protection, energy saving, asset management, and contactless healthcare monitoring, in turn making campus operations more secure and intelligent."
