Novo Nordisk Pharma (Thailand) Ltd. ("Novo") reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to people living with type 2 diabetes in Thailand, calling for greater public understanding of the disease as a serious, progressive condition that affects far more than blood sugar alone. The renewed call for awareness coincides with the local introduction of a higher dose semaglutide treatment option, expanding the range of therapies available to Thai healthcare professionals and their patients.

Type 2 diabetes: a bigger picture than blood sugar
The prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Thailand in 2025 is at 10.6 percentan increase from 9.5 percent in the last survey in 2020. Yet many people living with the condition and their families are unaware that diabetes is closely linked to some of the most serious health threats facing Thai society today:
- Cardiovascular disease including heart attack and stroke is the leading cause of death among people living with type 2 diabetes.
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects up to 40 percent of people with type 2 diabetes and diabetes is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease in Thailand.
- Obesity and overweight are present in the majority of people living with type 2 diabetes and further increase the risk of other complications.

These interconnected conditions often referred to as cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome mean that managing type 2 diabetes today requires more than lowering long-term blood sugar levels (HbA?c). It requires a holistic approach that also protects the heart and kidneys and supports healthy weight.

Rethinking type 2 diabetes care
Research and development have transformed what is possible in type 2 diabetes care. A new generation of therapies has demonstrated benefits that extend beyond blood sugar control, including improvements in body weight and reductions in the risk of major cardiovascular and kidney-related events.

As part of this evolution, Novo has introduced in Thailand a new, higher dose Semaglutide treatment option for adults living with type 2 diabetes. The therapy reflects the company's continued investment in innovation for people living with diabetes and other serious chronic diseases. Decisions on the most appropriate treatment should always be made between a patient and their healthcare professional.

Mr Cihan Serdar Kicilzik, General Manager, Novo Thailand said: "Novo has been at the forefront of diabetes care for more than a century, and we recognise that type 2 diabetes is one of the most pressing public health challenges of our time. In Thailand, it is closely linked to CKM syndrome conditions that place an enormous burden on families and on the Thai healthcare system.

At Novo, our purpose is lasting health starts now, and that means encouraging people to start looking beyond blood sugar alone and to speak openly with their doctors about their holistic health conditions, including heart and kidney health.

We are proud to have worked with the diabetes community in Thailand for more than 40 years, and we remain committed to advancing science, raising awareness and working alongside healthcare professionals, patient groups and authorities to help every person living with type 2 diabetes live a longer, healthier life."

The launch event brought together more than 500 healthcare professionals for discussions on the modern understanding of type 2 diabetes management and how the higher dose treatment can help patients take a more a more holistic approach to care.
