Bangkok--Nov 3--Dell Computer Corporation
Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq:DELL), the world s leading direct computer systems company, recently officially inaugurated its China Customer Center, an integrated sales and manufacturing facility and customer call center in Xiamen.
Timed to coincide with the official opening is chairman and CEO Michael S Dell s visit to Beijing where he will meet with government officials as well as Dell s customers and employees. Accompanying Michael Dell is John J Legere, president, Dell Computer Corporation, Asia Pacific and David Chan, Dell s recently-appointed president for its operations in the People s Republic of China.
“With the official opening of the China Customer Center, Dell takes another important step forward in China, ” said Mr Dell. “This move places us closer to our customers in a market that presents exciting long-term growth opportunities. Today s event is a milestone in our company s global expansion, a symbol of our confidence in China and a commitment to our customers in China.”
The China Customer Center is Dell s second integrated manufacturing facility in the Asia Pacific region since the company opened its Asia Pacific Customer Center in Penang, Malaysia, in January 1996. The Xiamen facility manufactures Dell s range of OptiPlex desktop PCs, Latitude notebooks and PowerEdge servers for Dell customers and distributors in China, while the Penang facility continues to serve the manufacturing and customer service requirements of the rest of the region.
Dell Officially Launches China Customer Center 2-2-2
The China Customer Center employs more than 200 people in Xiamen, with staffing expected to increase as the demand for Dell products and services in China grows. The center is located in a 135,000 square-foot facility and provides sales, service and technical support with local language capabilities for the China market.
The official opening follows Dell s commencement of direct sales and technical support operations in August 1998 in nine major metropolitan areas in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xiamen. As part of its direct operations, the company successfully introduced toll-free sales and technical support telephone hotlines in China to provide local-language assistance to customers. Dell also opened a “virtual” computer store on the Internet, making Dell one of the first computer systems companies in China to conduct e-commerce and e-service.
“The Dell direct business model redefined the relationship between the people who buy computer systems and the people who make them” said Mr Dell. “With the launch of our direct operations in China, we can now bring the inherent benefits and efficiencies of our business model to China and establish closer, more personal relationships with our customers.”
“We have been encouraged by customer responses in China since we went direct in August,” added Mr Legere. “China is one of the fastest-growing PC markets in the Asia Pacific region, and we look forward to building our presence over time.”
Dell s involvement in the China market has grown steadily in recent years. The company established offices in Beijing in 1995, in Guangzhou in 1997 and in Shanghai in 1998. It has been steadily expanding staff and customer relationships throughout the country.
