Bangkok--5 Oct--IDC
According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker, 2Q 2012, the Thailand tablet market in Q2 2012 witnessed exceptional growth of 300% year-over-year (YoY) and 127% sequentially, with shipments totaling 466,000 units.
"The growth in 2Q 2012 was observed across all market segments. Intense competition between Apple and Samsung presented consumers in the mid to upper class segments with more choices which has helped keep the market growing at an impressive rate," said Jarit Sidhu, Market Analyst for Client Devices Research at IDC Thailand. "Telecom operators have also played their part by actively promoting bundled data packages at attractive price points for tablets."
Jarit continues, "The entry-level market in turn received a major boost with the government's One Tablet per Child (OTPC) scheme. This project played a dual role by directly increasing shipment volumes as well as promoting awareness of tablets nationwide. Local vendors such as GNET and i-Mobile were among those who benefitted from this scheme in Q2, as they posted strong growth numbers."
Thailand now ranks among the biggest and the fastest-growing markets in Asia-Pacific for tablets. With more than 670,000 units shipped in the first half of 2012, IDC forecasts that this meteoric rise will continue throughout 2012.
IDC has revised its 2012 forecast up from 125% to 140% growth. Shipments, inclusive of this year's OTPC, are expected to surpass 1.4 million units. Benefitting from a number of choices as well as attractive data plans, the consumer market is anticipated to expand robustly with new players entering the market while the commercial market will also start to pick up, notably the education space as well as across other vertical sectors.
