The Christmas Tree of Merit
Siripanna Villa Resort & Spa, Chiang Mai celebrates Christmas and New Year with the self-created Lanna Christmas Tree of Merit, decorated with the traditional Lanna ‘Tung’, which literally means ‘flag’ in Northern Thai. The Tung is a symbol of prosperity intended for use in religious ceremonies.
To participate in the festive decoration of the Lanna Christmas Tree of Merit, Siripanna invites all guests to donate money by displaying it on the Tung. All the money on the Christmas Tree of Merit will go towards the reconstruction project of Sao Inthakin Sanctuary at Wat Chedi Luang.
Sao Inthakin is the name of the city pillar of Chiang Mai. The pillar was built when the founder of Chiang Mai, King Mengrai, ruled the city from 1296. Located in front of Wat Chedi Luang and enshrined in a small Thai chapel, the pillar is made of logs and kept underground.
