The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Kandahar University to broaden and intensify its partnership with the university in Afghanistan located in the southern region of the country.
Signing the MoU in Bangkok on 25 January 2013 with Kandahar University (KU) Chancellor Prof. Hazrat Mir Totakhil, AIT President Prof. Said Irandoust said his institute looked forward to continuing its efforts to assist rebuilding in the war-torn country through higher learning development, and by working even more with KU.
The four-year MoU will enable cooperation between AIT and KU by providing human resource development, curriculum enhancement, strengthening of research capability, institutional development and other partnership programs.
Established in 1990 and located in the Kandahar city, KU is one of Afghanistan’s five major national universities. KU has eight faculties, including Agriculture, Medicine, Engineering, Education, Sharia Law, and Economics.
Seven Afghani students from Kandahar University are currently enrolled in graduate programs at AIT, and another eight are studying at undergraduate levels. “Eventually at total of fifteen Kandahar University students will also graduate from AIT,” President Irandoust said. “All will return to assist the country’s development.”
The agreement was witnessed by Dr. Sangam Shrestha, Assistant Professor, Water Engineering and Management, School of Engineering and Technology, AIT, and Assistant Professor Abdul Tawab Balakarzai, Vice Chancellor for Academics, KU, as well as numerous KU and AIT officials gathered.
