IBM Expands Market Reach in Rapidly Growing Sectors such as SMBs and Emerging Markets; New Offerings Help Address Skills Gap, Cost and Complexity of IT
IBM today announced it is expanding the opportunity for rapidly growing sectors, such as small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) and emerging markets, to take advantage of big data and cloud computing by making these technologies more consumable. With the rollout of eight new Power Systems, three new PureSystems models, and new Storage Systems, it is now easier and more cost-effective than ever for clients to quickly create cloud services and analyze massive amounts of data.
Today’s news comes on the heels of IBM’s recent agreement with Ingram Micro and TechData to resell IBM’s entire portfolio of Power, Pure and Storage Systems, which now puts the power of IBM’s high performance systems into the hands of SMBs.
SMBs -- which make up nearly half of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP), historically have struggled to adopt big data and cloud computing due to the cost of systems and a lack of skills. As a result of today’s announcement, SMBs from around the globe can now obtain the same technological foundation as the Global 2000 including companies in mature and emerging markets. .
Together, these moves by IBM are expanding the market reach of its capabilities, helping organizations overcome their skills shortage when adopting these technologies.
New Systems Tuned for Big Data
IBM estimates that 2.5 exabytes of data is created every day — so much that 90 percent of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone.
As a result, organizations of all sizes and across all industries are challenged to find simpler and more cost effective ways to analyze data and better meet client needs.
Today’s news from IBM helps remove the two biggest impediments to adopting big data — the cost of crunching data and the complexity involved with making sense of it all to drive better decision-making.
For instance, IBM is now extending its POWER7+ microprocessor technology to entry level and mid range systems. IBM POWER processors are a better platform for big data and cloud than x86 chips because virtualization, a key ingredient for big data computing, is built into the processor. With a price point starting at $5,947 (USD) for AIX, Linux or IBM i, the power of analytics has never been more cost-effective to obtain.
Also running POWER7+ processors are two new PowerLinux Systems, 7R1 and 7R2, for Linux workloads, and new Power Systems 750 and 760 models that provide a consolidation platform that automatically scales and provisions big data and cloud workloads.
Additionally, IBM’s latest innovation, PureData System for Analytics powered by Netezza technology, features 50 percent greater data capacity per rack and is able to crunch data three times faster. The system can be up and running in minutes. With this new offering, clients will be able to easily manage more data faster, while also maintaining efficiency in the data center.

IBM Makes Cloud Simpler for Business to Adopt
According to a recent IBM survey, almost three-fourths of leaders indicated their companies had piloted, adopted or substantially implemented cloud in their organizations —and 90 percent expect to have done so in the next three years. However, while the demand is high, many organizations — whether SMBs or those companies in both mature and new growth markets -- do not have the skills to embrace it.
To help clients overcome these obstacles, IBM today is introducing a new lost cost version of its PureSystems Application System. With its scale-in design and built-in expertise, PureSystems is designed to help clients to free up time and money to focus on innovation.
Out of the box, all PureSystems family members are built for the cloud. This new model, with a smaller footprint is designed for organizations that lack the IT skills needed to embrace cloud. Within 4-hours, it provides all of the infrastructure and management software necessary to quickly develop and deploy new applications in the cloud or on-premise. The system makes it easier to automate cloud services without in-house expertise and reduces power consumption by 30 percent.
New Managed Service Provider (MSP) Editions for PureFlex and Flex Systems also provide clients and IBM Business Partners with an accelerated cloud deployment platform that is faster to implement, easier to manage, and more cost effective than building the platform themselves. These new offerings will allow MSPs to cut operating expenses by up to 50 percent.
Additionally, as organizations aim to easily embrace cloud and virtualization technologies to improve efficiencies, lower costs, and gain faster access to much-needed storage capacity, IBM is introducing new Storage Systems.
IBM SmartCloud Storage Access is a new software package that lets organizations set up secure private storage clouds. The software features a self-service portal that lets any user create an account, set up the amount of storage they need, and then start uploading files via the cloud — all with just a few clicks and without the assistance of an IT administrator.
