Bangkok--16 May--Philips Electronics
Philips Electronics (Thailand) Ltd’s Lighting Sector unveils its new marketing campaign “Love Earth Days (LED)”, drastically cut price of its LED bulb to 199 Baht, offering a more affordable light bulb based on Light-Emitting Diode or LED technology to the public mass and strengthening its leadership position in Thailand lighting market.
Mr. Thanakorn Wongwises, General Manager of Philips Lighting Sector, said that Philips will excite the lighting market with the new LED campaign aiming to open up Thailand’s LED lighting market as we have seen an extraordinary increase in demand for LED lighting solutions in recent months. However, up until now mass consumers have not been able to switch to LED light bulbs because of their high prices when comparing to conventional bulbs and lack of distribution. Philips sees this as an opportunity to launch its affordable line of LED bulbs for consumer which should ease people of making a decision to switch to a more sustainable lighting solution.
The new Philips LED blubs are priced at 199 Baht (for 5 watt-LED bulbs), 270 Baht (for 8 watt-LED bulbs), 360 Baht (for 10 watt-bulb) and 470 Baht (for 13 watt-bulbs). Starting from May 14, 2013, the new Philips LED bulbs are available in over 8,000 retail stores, leading department stores and Philips Home Lighting Center nationwide.
Mr. Thanakorn said “with the new price tags, Philips aims to encourage Thai consumers to switch to LED bulbs that are retrofit, making it easy for people to replace conventional bulbs in their houses and immediately save up to 85% of their usual energy consumption. The products also have a long-lasting life of 15 years and are environmental friendly since they contain no mercury.
Philips officially kicks off its Philips Love Earth Days campaign on May 14 and sets the record of using 10,000 LED bulbs to create the magnificent 4 meter-high Philips LED Magic Tree and flowerlike LED garden in front of the Amarin Plaza in the heart of Bangkok, where Philips also showcases the effect of LED lighting and communicates to the public on many benefits and advantages of using Philips LED bulbs. To show how much it is saving, the 10,000-LED-bulb Magic Tree and garden consume only 740 Baht-a-day cost of electricity. That is 88% saving from conventional light bulbs (based on 3.7 Baht/Kwh and 4 usage hours per day) or 6,000 Baht a day. This amount of saving is equivalent to shutting down lighting of a large-sized condominium and a medium-sized housing complex for a day.
Philips also runs an online photo contest at www.facebook.com/philipslightingthailand between May 14-18, where the fans can take photos with Philips LED Magic Tree, upload them onto the site, and have a chance to win prizes from Philips. Apart from the launch event, Philips also plans to organize a nationwide roadshow program, promoting LED bulbs at points of sales as well as advertising the campaign though various media means.
Mr. Thanakorn said, “Besides building mass consumer awareness of the benefits of LED bulbs, Philips aims to drive the adoption of LED lighting solutions for general use. The past few years Philips has seen a rapid conversion to LED lighting solutions in professional markets like hospitality, industry, and outdoor. We believe that it is time for quality and affordable LED bulbs for home use with our latest offering.”
This year Philips plans to introduce more than 40 new LED bulb models adding to the current Philips’ line of LED MR-16 which have just recently been certified Energy Saving Label 5 by Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand. Moreover, Philips will also launch around 500 new luminaire models engined by LED technology. Philips plans to develop distributions to support the growing trend in LED lighting. The company will invest in various marketing activities including online and point-of-sales activities and displays for consumers to experience Philips LED first hand.
For the professional market, Philips plans to continue its marketing activities by focusing on educating how LED lighting users will get the maximum benefit out of various LED Lighting solutions and understand product’s potential and offering of our unique Turnkey Project and Services (Lighting design, Installation, and Payback Period calculation) to professional customers. An important showcase of Philips’ latest LED Lighting technology for professional customers will be held in the first Thailand’s LED Expo organized by Electricity Authority of Thailand (EGAT) between 23rd and 25th of May at Impact Arena Muangthong Thani. Philips is the key sponsor of the event where it will present the latest state-of-the-art technology in LED.
Mr. Thanakorn added “the market of the energy-saving lighting products has grown significantly over the past years due to the rising concerns on global oil price, shortage in energy resources, and global warming. These issues push many organizations around the world including those in Thailand to seek for proper energy saving solutions to deal with the concerns. It is estimated that over 19 percent of total global electricity use come from lighting consumption alone which if all existing lighting systems can be converted to energy saving lighting solutions, not only energy resources will be saved but also CO2 gas emission will dramatically be reduced. Philips, the world’s no.1 in lighting, continues its investment in developing LED Lighting technology that provide good quality, energy-efficient illumination and cost efficiency that already used in many applications like home, office building, retail stores, hotels, factory and infrastructure.
For Thailand, the total lamps and lighting fixtures presently are valued around 20 billion Baht in 2012. Of the total, lamps market is worth around 8.2 billion Baht (of which LED lamps are accounted for about 3 per cent) while lighting fixtures market is worth 12 billion Baht (of which LED fixtures accounted for about 11 percent). It is expected that the proportion of LED lamp will rise to 21 percent in total lamp market while the proportion of LED fixture will increase to 38 percent in 2014.
Mr. Thanakorn added “Philips Love Earth Days (LED) campaign emphasizes our commitment to drive consumers to make a switch to a more sustainable lighting solution with affordable and quality LED light bulbs, allowing them to have more choices to help save their own electricity bills as well as helping the country reduce energy consumption and slowing down global warming.”
