Plastic bags, drink cartons, and Styrofoam packages were invented to facilitate our consumption. However, the remains of these packages pose great challenges on the environment and lead to climate changes and flooding. “Currently, about 50,000 tons of waste were generated yearly in Thailand. Of this amount, 2,000 tons are plastic bags — an equivalent of the weight of 1,000 sedan cars — which take 500 years to decompose. We may have already become acquainted to using them — but have we thought about where these wastes go after we finish using them?” Kudatara Nagaviroj, Director of Corporate Affairs at Big C Supercenter PCL said.
To mark this year’s World Environment Day, Big C Supercenter invite the public to practice “Easy things you can do to save the Earth” to care for our environment with easy and simple steps as follows:
1. Use reusable bag to reduce plastic wastes -- such as Big C’s “Save the Earth” reusable bag which are made from durable and light-weighted canvas, can hold up to 20 kgs and can be reused often as you want. Packing more items into one bag and avoid requesting plastic bag when possible will also help reduce plastic wastes.
2. Recycle milk and beverage cartons at Big C -- The “Green Roof” recycling points at Big C stores nationwide — the collaboration between Big C Supercenter, Tetra Pak, Fiber Pattana and Department of Environmental Quality Promotion — has been collecting used beverage cartons for 3 years to be made into recycled paper and foil “green roofs” to build new houses for victims of natural disaster through Princess Pa Foundation, Thai Red Cross Society. To date, cartons from the donations have been turned into more than 30,000 green roofs.
3. Recycle mobile phones, batteries and accessories at “Mobile Battery For Life” stations at Big C -- Big C and DTAC will properly dispose and reuse the parts. For every 5,000 pieces collected, DTAC will save the life of a cow or buffalo from slaughterhouse and give to farmers to support their livelihoods as well.
