IKEA Bangna will celebrate its Scandinavian roots with a colourful Swedish Midsummer (Solstice) themed promotion on June 22.
As part of an in-store Solstice activity, IKEA customers will have the chance to create and wear their own traditional Swedish “krans” (a floral headband or crown).
“Although we are more than 8,000 kilometres away from Sweden, we will celebrate Solstice in Bangnaby holding our first ever krans, or flower-headband, making workshop on June 22,” said Lacia Sherlock, Store Manager of IKEA Bangna.
She added, “Just as flower garlands are important to many Thai people, the making, and wearing of a krans on Midsummer Eve, is special to many Swedes.
“We are looking forward to the event and on the day, we hope to see many customers with flowers in their hair.”
After Christmas, Solstice (the longest day of the year) is the second most popular celebration event in Sweden. Solstice eve falls on the Friday closest to June 24 and marks the start of a weekend of festivities with many families coming together to dine, party, and dance.
As a tradition, many Swedes begin Solstice eve by picking flowers and making wreaths and headbands to wear the next day.
In keeping with the Swedish theme, IKEA will also promote its Scandinavian Traditional and Scandinavian range of furniture and home accessories throughout the year.
IKEA’s Scandinavian Traditional range is designed to be functional, warm, individual, and playful utilising light colours influenced by Swedish folklore, nature and rural life. As well as stripe and check designs, the traditional range products are made from wool, linen, coloured stained wood, and black metal.
Contemporary Sweden meanwhile, is represented in IKEA’s Scandinavian collection that features bright colours and bold graphics — including polka dots and deer motifs - to convey a ‘young at heart’ look and feel. This is reinforcedwith diverse materials such as coloured lacquer, metal, plastic, glass and natural fibres.
