Bangkok--24 Jul--IBM
The IBM Startup event for the South East Asian region is now open for submissions. IBM SmartCamp is the centerpiece of IBM’s Global Entrepreneur Program, aimed at identifying early stage entrepreneurs who are developing business ventures that align with the IBM Smarter Planet vision. In just three years, the program is already proving to be a valuable resource for entrepreneurs. Past SmartCamp participants have gone on to generate more than US$115 million in VC/Angel funding following their work with IBM.
Selected SmartCamp participants will be involved in a two day-long event that engage and judge the best startup companies in the region. At the event, IBM will bring together local venture capitalists, serial entrepreneurs, professors and IT industry experts to provide mentoring and advice to the participants.
At the conclusion of the event on 11 October in Kuala Lumpur at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2013, finalists will pitch their business to a panel of judges. The winner of this SmartCamp event will receive mentoring, services, access to industry experts and deeper partnership opportunities from IBM, venture capital firms and industry partners. The winner would also receive an invitation to participate in SmartCamp Global Finals, where the IBM Global Entrepreneur of the Year is named.
Many SmartCamp participants have formed close business partnerships with IBM and other IT companies. For example, Singapore based HistoIndex Pte Ltd, which was last year’s regional winner, went on to compete in the global finals in New York City. HistoIndex is a products and services provider in the area of medical diagnostics currently working with an investor from China. This winning startup has been busy fine tuning their solution, which is built on IBM platform. They are working to provide services to a few hospitals in China, Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, US, France and UK from where they are getting tissue samples as fee-for-service for analysis and prognosis purposes.
HistoIndex was among the 6 finalists from the region that included Firegent iASP from Malaysia, Innova Technology, Vitastrak, and Zweec Analytics from Singapore, along with Technobaik Informedia from Indonesia.
IBM SmartCamps judge the best start-up company in different cities around the globe. SmartCamps are designed to spark innovation and help startup companies bring technologies that tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues — such as healthcare, water management and efficient energy resources — to market faster.
IBM has engaged with close to 1,600 startups to bring new technologies to market and has a deep commitment to the entrepreneurial and venture communities.
