Bangkok--30 Jul--Spark Communications Demand for New Zealand-native Greenshell mussels in Thailand is at an all-time high, recent trade statistics indicate. Thai consumers have fallen in love with New Zealand Greenshell mussels, leading to a 141 percent increase in exports to Thailand in the year to May 2013. Thailand has soared to become the third largest international market for New Zealand mussels, and the number one market in Asia. The Greenshell mussels, which are indigenous to New Zealand, are available in Thailand under the Closer Economic Partnership free trade agreement, meeting growing demand where no local alternative is available. Unique to New Zealand, Greenshell mussels are sustainably grown and harvested in crystal clear waters, and are in demand by international and Thai chefs and consumers alike. The mussels are widely used in Thai restaurants in local seafood dishes and recognised as a premier product. "The increase in exports of mussels from New Zealand to Thailand reflects fast-growing demand,” says Karen Campbell, New Zealand's Trade Commissioner to Thailand. “New Zealand Greenshell mussels are farmed with a firm dedication to food safety protocol and environmental protection, which are important to consumers in Thailand.” "Thai consumers love New Zealand Greenshell mussels not just for the fantastic size and taste, but also their health benefits. The high Omega-3 count of Greenshell mussels is known to improve eye and brain health, as well as supporting clear skin. All of these benefits are key consumer drivers in Thailand." Longstanding and recent agreements with a wide range of hypermarkets and supermarket operators have seen New Zealand native Greenshell mussels become available across the Kingdom. A stable regulatory framework which is consistently applied is a backbone for commercial operations, and is key to enable retailers to provide a continual supply to consumers. The Closer Economic Partnership agreement was signed between New Zealand and Thailand in 2005. Trade between the two countries has doubled since the agreement was signed.
