SUN Microsystems Names Bill Joy Chief Scientist

Bangkok--Dec 9--Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced Bill Joy, a company cofounder and world renowned computer scientist, has been named Chief Scientist. In his new position, Joy will report directly to Scott McNealy, Sun's Chairman, president and CEO. Prior to being named Chief Scientist, Joy served as vice president of research at Sun. As Chief Scientist, Joy will serve on Sun's executive committee, the company's senior management committee. His responsibilities also include actively promoting Sun's vision of network computing and leading Internet technologies including Java(TM), Jini(TM), and Solaris(TM)operating enviroment. Joy will work closely with Chief Technology Officer, Greg Papadopoulos, and Chief Strategy Officer, Bill Raduchel, and will take an active leadership role in determining Sun's future technological development and direction. "Since Sun's founding, Bill has been the inspiration behind some of the company's most significant and successful technological breakthroughs," said Scott McNealy, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Sun Microsystems, Inc. "His vision and ability to identify major technological trends has made Sun the leader in network computing." At Sun, Joy has led some of Sun's most significant innovations including designing its standard setting (NFS)(TM) Network File System, the business and technical strategy for the Java programming language and platform, as well as the Jini distributed system. He is also a co-designer of the SPARC(TM) Architecture for the embedded market and systems. He is the co-author of the book on the Java Language Specification, the definitive description of the Java Programming Language. Joy came to Sun from the University of California at Berkeley where he was the author of Berkeley UNIX, an early example of an "open source" operating system, that strongly supported TCP/IP and the Internet. Recently, Joy was appointed by President Clinton to serve as co-chair of the Presidential Information Technology Advisory Committee. The committee recently issued a report detailing the need for additional funding for information technology research in order to maintain America's lead in IT and to meet critical infrastructure and defense needs in the 21st century. Joy also serves as a member of the board of directors of the Novell Corporation. He holds a Master's in Science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Bachelor's of Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
