Samitivej Sukhumvit, a top private hospital in Thailand and Southeast Asia, reinforced its leading role in promoting breastfeeding and its international prestigious reputation as a Mother and Baby Friendly Hospital by WHO and UNICEF as well as Thai awards from the Health Department of Thailand’s Ministry of Health. Samitivej was also awarded the Gold Class-Family Bonding Hospital by HRH Princess Srirasm, the Royal Consort to the Crown Prince of Thailand in 2008 and 2012.
Samitivej celebrated “World Breast Feeding Week 2013 Breastfeeding Support: Close to Mothers” with 170 other countries to promote every aspect of encouraging breastfeeding. Under our theme of “Breastfeeding with Love”, we invited mothers from different backgrounds to participate in the event by sharing their first-hand experiences and useful knowledge about breastfeeding.
Jitjumlong Harinasuta, M.D., Deputy Director of Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital stated that the: “World Breastfeeding Week 2013 placed a great emphasis on close collaboration between all involved entities in encouraging mothers to breastfeed their babies because breast milk is the best source of food for babies in terms of nutrition and developing a bond between mother and baby. With these ideas in mind, Samitivej Sukhumvit hospital has continuously acknowledged and promoted breastfeeding while at the same time developing an all-embracing support to ensure every drop of breast milk reaches the baby. In practice, Samitivej Sukhumvit encourages every mother who gives birth at the hospital to breastfeed under close supervision from a team of doctors and nurses who are on hand at all times to provide advice and suggestions on how to breastfeed properly throughout the post-natal recovery period at the hospital. Furthermore, the hospital offers mothers with a Lactation Clinic and Baby Homecare Service, which provides nurses to visit mothers at home when they are experiencing any problems with breastfeeding. This service provides mothers with convenient and close access to specialist advice and has been increasingly well-received from mothers over the years,” explains Dr. Jitjumlong.
“Apart from the excellent services offered to mothers, we encourage all our staff who have young babies to breastfeed. To facilitate this, we provide special facilities including a breastfeeding room for them.
“Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital very much hopes that these efforts support mother's breastfeeding success persistently. Mothers and everyone involved to raise awareness about the substantial benefits of breastfeeding, which is the best source of food for babies, will successfully promote breastfeeding among mothers over the long term.”
