Water hyacinth will no longer be unwanted plant, as it can be turned into alternative material source for community… such as the world’s first fabric handbags made from the water hyacinth fibre that were shown at the recent ‘Bangkok OTOP Runway 2013’.
The Bangkok OTOP Runway 2013 was organized by The Community Development Department, Ministry of Interior. The runway event was held to showcase the first-ever fabric handbag made from water hyacinth fibre and the event took place at Central World’s Eden Zone. Presiding over the event was Interior Minister Charupong Ruangsuwan.
Mr.Charupong Ruangsuwan, Minister of Interior said ‘as the new step for Thailand OTOP listed in global ranking, we need to produce something with better quality and style that has nowhere.
Consequently, the fabric handbag from water hyacinth fibre is developed. The fabric handbags are totally different from ordinary basketry. We can make use of the mass water hyacinth. In this case we turn water hyacinth into worthy resource or turning a pest into profit for community.’
The event featured a fashion show presenting fabric handbags made from water hyacinth fibre by models and guest celebrities. Absolutely, the show started by Thailand’s first Miss Universe Apasra Hongsakula and followed by many celebrities including M.L.Preeyaphan Srithawat, Dr.Sirikorn Maneerin, Ms.Kanjana Silpa-archa, Ms.Sawitree Dhamapong, Ms.Visaradee Techateerawat, Mr.Patsarakorn Chirathivat, Mr.Warawut Laohapongchana, Ms.Siraprapa Chirabandhu, Ms.Chindapa Boonyagorn, Ms.Chatchada Kongtoranin, Mr.Pita Limjaroenrat and Mrs.Chutima Limjaroenrat
The star model of the show was well-known Thai actresses Pancake-Khemanit Jamikorn presenting fabric handbag made from water hyacinth fibre with dangling 50-carat Siamese rubies which is believed that wealth never departed. The handbag is worth 500,000 Baht.
The event also exhibited variety women’s accessories including purses, clutches, tote bags, handbags, shoulder bags, decorative items and premium gifts. Among the attractions was the demonstration by craftsmen on how to weave water hyacinth fibre.
