Bangkok--6 Nov--UN Press Conference 7 November 2013 Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel 199 Sukhumvit Soi 22, Bangkok 10110, Thailand 12:30 — 13:30 (lunch provided), Terrace (9th floor) The 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) governments reaffirmed that promoting patterns of sustainable consumption and production (SCP) is one of the three overarching objectives of, and essential requirements for sustainable development. Indeed the only formal agreement reached at the Rio+20 among Heads of State was their strengthened commitment to accelerate the shift towards SCP patterns with the adoption of the 10YFP, in paragraph 226 of the Outcome Document “The Future We Want”. The 10YFP is a global framework of action to enhance international cooperation and accelerate the shift towards SCP in both developed and developing countries. The framework will support capacity building, and facilitate access to technical and financial assistance for developing countries to make this shift; while encouraging innovation and cooperation among all stakeholders. The Asia-Pacific region is at the forefront of developing innovations towards greener growth and sustainable lifestyles for citizens and these achievements are extremely valuable in the Region in moving forward and in responding to the global challenges of decoupling environmental degradation from economic growth. This November 7-8th 2013, the First Asia-Pacific Meeting of the Rio+20 10 YFP 10 on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP) will be held in Bangkok, Thailand. This first ever Regional Meeting is organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as host organisation of the 10YFP Secretariat, in cooperation with the Government of Thailand, and the 10YFP Board representative Governments of the Republic of Indonesia and the Republic of Korea, and with the financial support of the European Union. The meeting is focused on Asia, where Asian consumers are expected to represent the world’s largest group of consumers, with consumer spending predicted to reach USD $32 trillion. With over 60% of the world population already in Asia, this group of consumers is increasing at a rate of 1.2% yearly. As such, the Asia-Pacific region will be ground zero for tackling the effects of climate change, and developing those innovative solutions needed to advance a sustainable future for all. This meeting will brings together government representatives in Asia Pacific, as well as participants from the private sector, civil society, academia, and international organizations, to create a regional Roadmap on the 10YFP and advance sustainable consumption and production strategies across the Asia-Pacific through joint government action over the coming years. Before the 10YFP meeting, the Regional SWITCH-Asia Policy Support Component (PSC) networking event and Technical Advisory Committee Meeting will be held from 5-6 November 2013 to share information on the 2013 activities of the SWITCH Asia PSC sub regional activities and to refine proposals and priorities for 2014 activities including recommended activities for the 10YFP.
