Bangkok--9 Dec--SET
The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) has successfully hosted the first Capital Market Education Forum (CMEF), under the concept “Settle Standards for Professional Education,” to exchange insights on capital market development among professionals in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), underlining a SET mission to build a strong network and cooperation in the GMS.
SET President Charamporn Jotikasthira said the forum resulted from an August meeting of the CEOs of GMS exchanges and other capital market-related units to network and share insights in capital market development. Thus, executives from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand shared their insights on setting expertise standards for securities professionals, determining license structures, controlling training and examination standards, widely promoting license examination to boost quality of professionals in the industry, providing skills for investors and personal financial literacy to the general public, and exploring the pros and cons of supporting financial literacy to various targets.
“Continuously developing the literacy of capital market participants, especially competency standards for professionals, is the key foundation in developing capital markets at the primary level. This is a starting point in enhancing the literacy for other groups, including teaching savings skills to the general public and securities management for investors. Capital market education is a key factor to help the capital market grow strongly and sustainably. Therefore the CMEF will be an important initiative for supporting capital market development in the GMS region as a whole. Education development is a key mission of SET for developing the Thai capital market in the long run, and SET’s activities in this area are managed by its Thailand Securities Institute,” Charamporn said.
Capital Market Education Forum 2013 was held on November. As a result, the participants agreed to set up a working committee to develop and set mutual standards for professionals in this region. SET will host the forum in 2014.
