DHL Express employees in Thailand raise more than 200,000 baht to provide relief and reconstruction supplies for Typhoon Haiyan Victims

Bangkok--2 Jan--Aziam Burson-Marsteller - Efforts supplements arrival last month of first members Deutsche Post DHL’s Disaster Response Team ( DRT) - DRT has been helping with on-the-ground airport logistics on Cebu island DHL Express Thailand, part of Deutsche Post DHL, the world's leading postal and logistics group, recently held a series of internal fund raising drives and provided a cash donation of more than 200,000 baht to the Thai Red Cross Society. The funds will be used to advance further relief and reconstruction efforts in those most severely damaged areas in the Philippines. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), over 10 million people have been affected and more than 660,000 are displaced. The Red Cross Society in Thailand has already sent more than 3,000,000 baht of its own funds to the Philippines to assist those most affected by the devastation. It has also received more than 18,000,000 baht from individuals and corporations in Thailand and has targeted total external party donations of more than 30,000,000 baht before final disbursement to the Philippines by the end of this year. “These voluntary contributions from our employees underscore our historical commitment and passion to helping people most in need with assistance that both addresses current needs and also infrastructure building concerns that will last for months,” said Chananyarak Phetcharat, Managing Director, DHL Express Thailand and Indochina. “We can all take pride in contributing to this outpouring of ‘People Power’ as it takes hold in rebuilding the lives of so many disaffected people in the Philippines.” Soon after the typhoon struck, DHL sent the first members of its Disaster Response Team (DRT), which consists of more than 400 employees worldwide, to the central Philippines to help with on-the-ground airport logistics by setting up a warehouse to help sort relief goods. DRT continues to operate at the regional Mactan Cebu Airport on Cebu island right next to the country’s mostaffected Leyte island. The DRT will manage the logistics of the inbound relief goods sent via air or sea by the international community and help ensure the quick and constant flow of goods to the most needy families in the Philippines.
