The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) has recently joined hands with brokers to continuously educate investors on using derivative warrants(DW), andexpectsthatDWs on SET Index series can be launched by brokers this year.As many as 761 DWs were launchedin 2013, with an average daily trading value of THB 1,000 million(approx. USD 33 million), increasing 254 percent from the previous year.
There were three new DW issuers in 2013 plus onenew issuer this year, resulting in13 DW issuers in total, said SET Executive Vice President Kesara Manchusree. To make DWs more diversified and attractive for investors, thebourse has added more underlying assets, covering stocks in the SET100 Index, exchange-traded fundswith underlying SET-listed securities and indices in the SET Index series such as the SET50, SET100, and SET High Dividend Indices. DW on indicesare expected to be available for trading this year.
“Most of the DWs launched in 2013 hadunderlying stocks in the SET50 Index. In addition, DWs with the right to sell (put warrant) gained more popularity due to the volatile market in the second half of 2013. The trading value of put warrants accounted for 26 percent of total DW trading value, compared with only 11 percent in 2012. As of the end of 2013, there were 500 DWs available for trading,of which 393 were DWs with the right to buy (call warrants) and 107 were put warrants. The average daily trading value of DW last year was THB 1,000 million (approx. USD 33 million), or 2.08 percent of the total securities trading value in the SET, comparing with 2012, when average daily trading value of DW was THB 282 million (approx. USD 9.4 million), or 0.91 percent of the total securities trading value in the Thai bourse,” Kesara added.
