Sonia Delaunay was born in Gradizsk in Ukraine in 1885. She discovered her vocation for art at an early age and studied since 1903. Sonia Delaunay had a passion for color. In her signature version of Cubism, she juxtaposed vivid blocks of color to explore their tonal relationships. She named her distinctive style simultanéisme, a term she adopted from the treatise De la loi du contrastesimultané des couleurs (The Law of the Simultaneous Contrast of Colors). She was the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre in 1964, and in 1975 was named an officer of the French Legion of Honor. She married the artist Robert Delaunay in 1910, with whom she often collaborated. Her work included paintings, collages, books, posters, decorative objects, textiles, clothing, and theater sets and costumes.
