MEX Exhibitions Pvt. Ltd. & IMPACT Exhibition Management Co., Ltd. the organizers of LED Expo Thailand 2014 –Thailand’s International Exhibition on LED Lighting Products & Technology – recently organized the first ever Singapore LED Industry Forum on 13 February 2014. The event is part of a series of forums planned for South East Asia in regions like Taiwan & Myanmar besides Singapore to engage regional LED lighting sectors. The forum also serves as a prelude to LED Expo Thailand 2014, scheduled to take place later this year in Bangkok, Thailand from 22 to 24 May 2014.
Over 50 LED & lighting professionals representing more than 40 private and government organizations attended this highly informative forum which aimed at bringing together key players from the LED industry to exchange views on the trends and outlook of South East Asian LED sectors, and how to deliver better values for the market and industry. The forum discussed the need for the adoption of LED technology to off-set existing barriers in energy conservation and in bringing LED technology into the limelight.
Moderated by Ms. Himani Gulati, Director, MEX Exhibitions Pvt. Ltd., the forum kicked off with a general consensus amongst participants on the ample scope for the LED industry to grow in South East Asia especially with the current urge in market demand for energy-efficient lighting solutions and how LED can fill this gap. In spite of the obvious solution, participants also raised the need for more initiatives and incentives from the government to propel LED technology into the mainstream lighting sector. Taking the example of the Thai Government’s unwavering supportive to the LED industry: supporting investors, providing a range of tax incentives, import duty exemptions etc., participants voiced the need for other governments in other regions to take pro-active action as well.
Another interesting topic discussed at the forum was ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) 2015 which envisages transforming ASEAN into a region with free movement of goods, services, investment, skilled labor and free flow of capital. With AEC adopted tobe the goal of regional economic integration by 2015, an interesting discussion ensued on the affects of AEC on the LED industry and the possible market opportunities it could open.
During the forum, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), a state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Energy of Thailand and host organization of LED Expo Thailand 2014 revealed that the Ministry plans to reduce energy consumption by 20% in 2030 through its Demand Side Management (DSM) program implemented since 1993. One of the DSM strategies focuses on promoting the use of high efficiency appliances including LED lamps and LED lighting products. EGAT sees LED Expo Thailand 2014 as an effective platform to achieve this strategy.
Panelists: Mr. Pitarn Chaichinda, Director of Demand Side Management & Planning Division, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Mr. Steven Kwek, Asia South, SR iLLUMINATION / MOSO POWER SUPPLY and Mr. Kahphang Loh, President, VFZLED Co., Ltd. all consented to Thailand as being an important hub for ASEAN countries for a number of viable reasons. Thailand enjoys a strategic location and serves as a gateway into the heart of Asia – home to what is today the largest growing economic market. It is also ranked as the 10th most attractive host economy in the world. Most importantly, Thailand has long been a proponent of free and fair trade and is certain to be a beneficiary of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which will enter into force in 2015.
They also professed LED Expo Thailand 2014 will act as a deserving platform for highlighting and promoting the technology in LED markets across ASEAN and neighboring countries, providing the best networking opportunity between exhibitors and visitors exploring the use of LED for various domestic and commercial applications.
