Bangkok--16 Apr--Index Creative Village MEX Exhibitions Pvt. Ltd. & IMPACT Exhibition Management Co., Ltd. the organizers of LED Expo Thailand 2014 –Thailand’s International Exhibition on LED Lighting Products & Technology –organized the second LED Industry Forum in Taiwan on 20th March 2014 after successfully holding the first forum in Singapore in February. The event is part of a series of forums planned for Southeast Asia to engage regional LED lighting associations & professionals. Over 40 LED & lighting professionals representing more than 25 private and government organizations attended this highly informative forum which aimed at bringing together key players from the LED industry to exchange views on the trends and outlook of Southeast Asian LED sectors and how to deliver better values for the market and industry. The forum also discussed opportunities and barriers in energy conservation and in bringing LED technology into the limelight through government and private sector initiatives. The forum included panelists Mr. Sathit Sukanant, Director of Demand Side Implementation Division, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Mr. Steven Lin, Chairman of Taiwan Lighting Fixture Export Association (TLFEA), Mr. Jeng Ming-Shan, Director of Introduction of Green Energy & Environment Research Laboratories, Industrial Technology Research Institute(ITRI), started off with a general discussion on the outlook of the LED Market in the Southeast Asian region discussing the current market requirement in terms of energy-efficient lighting solutions and the use of high-efficiency lighting technology such as LED to help achieve the Ministry of Energy of Thailand’s goal to reduce GDP per unit of energy use in Southeast Asia by 20% in 2030 through its Demand Side Management (DSM) program. The forum also discussed the potential of LED markets under AEC and concluded that they portray huge markets for international LED manufacturers to further expand their business into the region. However, impediments towards the implementation of the AEC policy in 2015 include challenges in the production process of LEDs. LED products change lighting equipment and component’s production process as the manufacturers need to import “chips” from overseas because they cannot produce the component on their own and nor is it worthwhile to invest in chip production. These changes can result in a decrease in manufacturing employment. During the forum, Mr. Sathit Sukanant, Director of Demand Side Implementation Division, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, a state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Energy said that” Thai Government’s immense support in promoting the use of LED in the Private sector in Hotel & Resort industry, Hospitals ,Shopping Malls and Signage & Advertising. The government’s efforts include the MEP Standard of Label no 5.to save energy; Factories which use LED lighting are given a subsidy on their electricity bills. Future initiatives include replacing 1 million light bulbs through the government sector and also hopefully through the private sector and a pilot project which includes implementing the use of LED in the Military sector and in Hospitals”. The forum concluded on a hopeful note with regard to growth in the LED Industry in Southeast Asia. Mr. Steven Lin, Chairman of Taiwan Lighting Fixture Export Association (TLFEA) said, “The growth in Taiwan is about 120 billion US$, while in Mainland China it’s about 300 billion US$. The growth in the LED sector will increase to approx. 40-50% in the next 3-4 years.” The forum serves as a prelude to LED Expo Thailand 2014, scheduled to take place later this year in Bangkok, Thailand from 22 to 24 May 2014.
