Companies need to reanalyze their IT policies as business demands and an increasingly mobile workforce puts strain on the IT department, according to VMware survey
In a study released by VMware, more than six out of 10 working adults in Thailand felt that their home or home office would be the perfect place to work, with 66 percent indicating that they could maintain the same productivity level outside of office for at least 50 percent of the time. This reflects a new reality where more employees demand for the ability to work away from the office, at any time and on any device.
The VMware MeConomy 2014 study, which included over 153 respondents from Thailand, is a study on the attitudes and preferences of the modern employee in an increasingly mobile world, found that nearly 60 percent of working adults perceived work as “something to be done at the place you go.”
“As we look around the industry, mobile is changing the changing the way we work and businesses need to evolve. Companies can face a challenging time in this new mobile cloud era, where the business expectations of IT accelerates exponentially with the increase of new mobile consumers in the workforce, with millions of new applications and services despite a stagnant IT budget,” said Dr. Chawapol Jariyawiroj , Country Manager of VMware Thailand and Indochina.
Increasing demand on IT to support work from outside the office
With multiple access points such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones, mobile workers are putting pressure on IT departments to deliver a high level of service and access without compromise.
Employees surveyed expect their company to support a mobile workforce by enabling access to applications they need on their own devices (57 percent), allowing the use of personal devices for work (54 percent), and providing a comprehensive and accepted flexi-working policy (53 percent).
For IT support, they were eager to have faster network access (62 percent), equipment that works (54 percent) and quick/real-time response to their IT requests (51 percent).
