Beginning May 21 and closing June 6, 2014, the tour will cove rmajor cities in mainland China including Beijing, Shanghai, Changsha and Shenzhen, as well as engagements in Taiwan and Japan. In addition to the mainland cities, the Orchestra also makes a return trip to Macao, following last year’s highly successful Philadelphia Orchestra 2013 Residency and Fortieth Anniversary Tour of China –Macao, with Platinum Sponsor The Venetian Macao having arranged two full orchestra performances at The Venetian Macao, in addition to two community events supported by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR, giving locals and people of different communities the chance to enjoy the performance of one of the world’s best orchestras, including a chamber performance for individuals with visual impairments and local music students at Macao’s historic Dom Pedro V Theatre.
Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin makes his inaugural tour with the world-renowned orchestra with the 2014 Residency and Tour of Asia. Widely recognized for his musicianship, dedication, and charisma, Nézet-Séguin has established himself as a musical leader of the highest calibre and one of the most exciting talents of his generation. He continues his inspired leadership as the eighth music director of The Philadelphia Orchestra, which began in the fall of 2012. His highly collaborative style, deeply-rooted musical curiosity, and boundless enthusiasm, paired with a fresh approach to orchestral programming, have been heralded by critics and audiences alike. The New York Times has called Nézet-Séguin “phenomenal,” adding that under his baton, “the ensemble, famous for its glowing strings and homogenous richness, has never sounded better.”

The May 31 performance featuring the Macao Orchestra also represents The Venetian Macao’s efforts to foster cultural exchange in Macao and provide local talent with great opportunities to interact with some of the world’s top performing artists. For over 20 years, the Macao Orchestra has played an important role in the cultural life of Macao, with Lü Jia taking over as Music Director and Principal Conductor in September 2008. The orchestra performs several concert series each season, presenting both Western and Chinese masterpieces from past to present to encourage the pursuit of music among the wider public. The orchestra has become a symbol of Macao’s prosperity as an international cultural city, has worked with dozens of internationally renowned musicians and conductors, and has been invited to tour mainland China, South Korea, Portugal and Spain.
Besides featuring Nézet-Séguin, the 2014 Residency and Tour of Asia includes the orchestra’s two newest musicians –both of Chinese heritage. Associate concertmaster Ying Fu joined the orchestra at the start of the 2013-14 season; the Shanghai native started to learn violin at age 3 and studied at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music before going to the U.S. to continue his studies and perform professionally.Violinist Li Yiying joined the orchestra in January 2014, having begun her formal violin lessons at age 7in Beijing with Shengyin Huang at the Central Conservatory before her family moved to the U.S.
