Prof. C. Visvanathan, Dean, School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD), the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), who is among the top 12 technical experts appointed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) for its “Green Industry Platform,” highlighted the expertise of AIT in capacity building and knowledge sharing during the second technical expert meeting held in Vienna, Austria.
Speaking at the technical expert meeting held on 25-26 June 2014, Prof. Visvanathan spoke on the topicality and importance of greening the industry, and the significance of its value chains for attaining sustainable industrial development, and overall sustainability. As a representative from academia, Prof. Visvanathan highlighted how AIT, through its expertise in research, education and training activities, could strengthen the Green Industry Platform.
The SERD Dean also offered suggestions on the existing activities of the platform, and on formulating the short-and-medium term action plan for the Green Industry Platform. Besides, Prof. Visvanathan proposed strategies on effectively scaling up and mainstreaming green industry policies and practices on a global level.
The Green Industry Platform is a global high-level, multi-stakeholder partnership intended to act as a forum to catalyze, mobilize and mainstream action on green industry around the world. It provides a framework to bring together government, business and civil society, international organizations and academia leaders to secure concrete commitments and mobilize action in support of the Green Industry agenda.
UNIDO and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) are the convenors of the Platform. It has a 15-member advisory board and a 12-member technical expert committee.
