SABIC has been awarded National Best Safety Management Award by the Ministry of Labor in Thailand for the ninth consecutive year in recognition of its world-class environment, health, safety and security (EHSS) practices at its manufacturing site in Rayong. The award was presented by H.E. Mr. Atthaniti Disatha-Amnarj, Privy Councilor, Thailand, on 4 July 2014. Its Rayong site has maintained zero “lost time” accident since its operations in 2000. This award is at the back of the 6th Zero Accident Campaign by the Ministry of Labor in Thailand in 2013.
Upholding world-class EHSS standards is a core part of SABIC’s sustainability vision and strategy. This is guided through its global overarching framework called Safety, Security, Health and Environmental Management Standard (SHEMS) and its performance is monitored in 40 countries, supported by more than 40,000 employees through a suite of Key Performance Indexes (KPIs) including SABIC’s SHER metrics focusing on process safety, occupational health and safety, and environment and security. Our overall SHER for 2013 was 0.92 – a 4% improvement from 2012; we have achieved an average 9% improvement year on year since 2005 and our ambition is to continue on this trajectory towards our ultimate target of incident-free operations.
Sarun Sungkatavat, Country Leader, Thailand, said, “We are glad to receive this affirmation on our safety standards from the Ministry. Safety is the core priority in SABIC. We care about our employees’ safety in our manufacturing facilities, offices and customers’ site. Contractors and visitors are integrated into our safety systems through the SHEMs training module.”
Safety programs such as Behavior Based Safety (BBS), Lockout Tagout (LOTO) and Contractor Management have been implemented as a guide to daily operations for employees and contractors alike. EHSS concern reporting is taken seriously and quality reports are recognized and rewarded.
SABIC’s best-in-class EHSS program has also been consistently recognized in Thailand as it is among a very select group of private sector companies in the Eastern Seaboard Industry Estate to have a representative on the Rayong Provincial Level EHS Committee. Representatives from the plant are invited to be part of the panel of Best Safety Management Award Auditors, participating in the audit of companies in other industries that are up for the award.
